Seahawks Sign Trevon Diggs, 16 Others to Practice Squad
Nearly 24 hours after tabbing their initial 53-man roster for the upcoming start of the regular season, the Seattle Seahawks brought back several familiar faces as part of a 17-player practice squad on Monday, including veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs and four of their 2026 draft picks.
Diggs, a former First-Team All-Pro who signed with Seattle in mid-August, made his team debut in the preseason finale at Kansas City on August 28 and recorded an interception on the second drive of the game. But with only a handful of practices under his belt, the Seahawks terminated his contract as a vested veteran as part of cutdown day moves, with general manager John Schneider indicating that the organization had a plan in place to continue getting the former Alabama star fully up to speed and expected him to return in quick order as a member of the practice squad.
“He came in a little bit late and he's kind of just getting going,” Schneider said of Diggs on Sunday at the VMAC. “He's just kind of just getting ramped up, as you saw the other night, just getting his legs under him. But he feels he's confident and we're excited to get him going and see how far he can take this thing. He's really bought into like the culture and the guys and the staff and Karl [Scott] and Neiko [Thorpe] and those guys. So it's been pretty cool to see.”
Away from Diggs, Seattle also re-signed safety Rodney Thomas II and running back Velus Jones Jr. after releasing the vested veterans on Sunday, but several noteworthy veteran cuts from the day prior surprisingly were not on the initial practice squad. Among those not represented, safety D’Anthony Bell, receiver Cody White, and cornerback Noah Igbinoghene have not been re-signed to this point, though that doesn’t mean they won’t be signed later this week to either the active roster of the practice squad.
With all three of those players having four accrued NFL seasons, Bell, White, and Igbinoghene may be exploring their options to see if they can sign with a 53-man roster elsewhere in the league before deciding to return to the Seahawks.
On the rookie front, one day after trading with the Chargers for undrafted cornerback Avery Smith to continue shaking up the secondary, the Seahawks brought back seventh round picks Andre Fuller and Michael Dansby, who slipped through waivers after strong preseasons. Receiver Emmanuel Henderson Jr., a sixth round pick out of Kansas, as well as defensive tackle Deven Eastern, a seventh round pick out of Minnesota, also were retained on the practice squad for further development after being waived on Sunday.
For a second straight season, the Seahawks will benefit from having an International Pathway Program player on their practice squad, as center Federico Maranges will not count against the NFL’s 16-man limit, allowing the team to keep 17 players to on what coach Mike Macdonald calls the “ready” squad. In addition, undrafted EDGE defenders Aidan Hubbard and Marvin Jones Jr. were re-signed to Seattle’s practice squad, picked over the likes of vets Jalan Gaines and Jamie Sheriff, at least for the time being.
In other transaction-related business, Seattle released second-year linebacker Chris Paul Jr. from injured reserve with an injury settlement, making him a free agent free to sign with any of the other 31 teams.
