With the clock turning over from August to September, each MLB team has expanded their big-league roster to 28 total players, and the Seattle Mariners are no different.
The headliner of the latest September callups was 2021 first round draft pick Harry Ford, a catcher with a solid eye, good speed, and even a little pop (though like a lot of M’s hitting prospects, he swings and misses a fair amount) who the Mariners are looking to as a potential catcher/DH type. Over 97 games in AAA this year, Ford slashed .283/.408/.460 with 16 HR, 74 RBI, 74 walks, and 88 strikeouts.
Some speculated Ford would need to be moved to orchestrate a deadline deal for a proven veteran bat, but the Mariners were able to acquire first baseman Josh Naylor and third baseman Eugenio Suarez without including him as part of the trade package. Now, the team hopes he can provide some extra pop to the lineup as he makes the jump to face big league pitching.
Also called up by Seattle were reliever Luke Jackson—signed to a minor league deal on August 21 after being released by both the Rangers and Tigers—and infielder Leo Rivas, who is back in the show to add to his 30 games so far with the 2025 Mariners.
The eagle-eyed among you will notice that I mentioned three callups, and that’s because the M’s made a corresponding cut. Donovan Solano, who only appeared four times in August and whose departure was expected by many in Mariners circles, was released.
The Mariners organization also released pitcher Sauryn Lao, though he had been on the Rainiers at the time.
