Torrent Sign Abbey Murphy to Two-Year Rookie Contract

The Seattle Torrent announced the signing of recent second-overall pick Abbey Murphy to a two-year standard player agreement on Wednesday.

“I’m incredibly grateful and excited to officially start this journey in Seattle,” Murphy said in the announcement. “Getting to spend time in the city this summer, meet our fans and get a feel for the community made me even more excited to call Seattle home.”

Murphy was the no-doubt second overall pick at the 2026 PWHL Draft. She set the University of Minnesota record for goals and is second all-time in points. In her senior season, she had 40 goals and 66 points in 31 games and had seven points in seven games for Team USA at the Olympics to cap off a strong finish to her collegiate career.

“Abbey will make an immediate impact in this league with her grit, creativity, and attack mentality,” general manager Meghan Turner said. “This two-year contract gives us the ability to develop with her as she establishes her identity at this level and as we build for future seasons. This is something we’ve been looking forward to in our preparation for the year, and we’re ready to get her on the ice in November.”

The Torrent did not reveal Murphy’s rookie salary. The PWHLPA announced last year’s player salaries in April. 2025 first-overall pick Kristyna Kaltounkova made $90,500 in salary last year and second-overall pick Haley Winn made $60,000.

“I can’t wait to take the ice at Climate Pledge Arena with this group and play in front of the loudest and best fans in the league,” Murphy said. “I’m ready to get to work. Let’s go, Torrent!”

Murphy is the first of Seattle’s rookies to sign their rookie PWHL contract. Expect more of them to sign shortly before or just after November 18, when training camps open across the PWHL.
