Seahawks Roster Cuts Tracker: Breaking Down Every Move Made to Reach 53-Man Limit

Preview

With the preseason now officially in the books, the NFL will now transition into one of the darkest periods on the calendar, as the Seattle Seahawks and all 32 teams will have to trim their rosters from 90 players to 53 before the August 26 deadline.

While it is an unfortunate reality of the business, more than 1,000 players across the league will receive a pink slip in a 72-hour span, while several others who make the initial 53-man rosters will walk on eggshells with more moves to come as teams comb through the waiver wire. In addition, plenty of trades will take place between teams leading up to Tuesday’s 1 PM PT deadline, and as evidenced by the Commanders re-signing receiver Terry McLaurin, contract extensions also will be on the menu in a chaotic couple of days.

Who will the Seahawks choose to keep heading into the 2025 season? And will general manager John Schneider be active on the trade market before dwindling the roster down to 53 players? Come back often as I break down each and every reported transaction and rumor leading up to the cutdown deadline:

August 25

11:00 AM: According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 Houston, the Seahawks have waived undrafted rookie linebacker Alphonzo Tuputala. The former Washington Husky joined the team late in training camp as additional depth with Tyrice Knight and Josh Ross ailing and participated in the final two preseason games, generating five tackles and a sack.

12:53 PM: According to Brady Henderson of ESPN, the Seahawks have waived undrafted rookie tackle Luke Felix-Faulalo, who signed with the team back in June after finishing his college career at Hawaii. Felix-Faulalo split time between left and right tackle during training camp and the preseason, allowing one pressure on 24 pass blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus.

5:51 PM: According to Wilson, the Seahawks have waived undrafted rookie outside linebacker Seth Coleman. The former Illinois standout signed with Seattle as a priority free agent after the draft and after being released and re-signed in early August, per PFF charting, he produced six pressures and a sack while finishing in the top seven among rookie edge defenders with a 19.2 percent pass rush win rate in three preseason games.

August 26

10:00 AM: According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Seahawks have agreed to trade second-year tackle Mike Jerrell to the Falcons for a conditional 2026 seventh-round pick. Drafted out of Findlay University in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Jerrell started three games as a rookie for Seattle, including in a road win against Atlanta, who needed tackle help with Kaleb McGary expected to miss significant time due to injury.

10:01 AM: According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Seahawks are expected to waive undrafted rookie cornerback Isas Waxter with hopes of bringing him back on the practice squad. The former All-American from Villanova recorded three tackles and allowed two receptions for 12 yards on three targets in three preseason games.

10:08 AM: According to Zenitz, the Seahawks will waive veteran cornerback Damarion Williams, who previously played for coach Mike Macdonald in Baltimore. The former Houston standout had 13 tackles and a pass breakup in a stellar preseason for Seattle and could be a practice squad option if he clears waivers.

10:17 AM: According to Zenitz and as confirmed through a team source, the Seahawks will waive rookie running back Damien Martinez, making him the first 2025 draft pick not to make the initial 53-man roster. The bruising back out of Miami rushed for 84 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown during the preseason, but his lack of contributions on special teams ended up hurting him with George Holani seizing the third running back spot for Seattle.

10:33 AM: According to Pelissero, the Seahawks have waived former All-Rookie special teams performer Jerrick Reed II, who was squeezed out as part of an incredibly deep safety group. Reed, a sixth-round pick out of New Mexico in 2023, suffered a torn ACL late in his rookie season and struggled to bounce back from the injury, but if he clears waivers, he could be a strong candidate to return on the practice squad.

10:46 AM: According to Henderson, the Seahawks have informed undrafted rookie defensive tackle Bubba Thomas that he would be waived. The ex-South Alabama starter appeared in all three preseason games, generating six combined tackles and a pressure.

11:46 AM: According to Henderson, with starter Chris Stoll gradually working back onto the practice field, the Seahawks have waived veteran long snapper Zach Triner. If Stoll, who has been battling a sore back, isn’t ready for the season opener, Triner could return on the practice squad to be eligible for game day elevation, while tight end Brady Russell also has proven capable of snapping in an emergency situation.

12:08 PM: According to Henderson, in a surprising move, the Seahawks have waived third-year linebacker Patrick O’Connell. The former Montana standout appeared in five regular season games for Seattle last season, but he has previously slipped through waivers each of the past two seasons, so the organization must feel confident they can slip him to the practice squad again after a strong preseason.

12:49 PM: According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Seahawks have released veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling despite having $3 million in guarantees for the 2025 season. Seattle signed the speedy wideout in free agency after he played well in coordinator Klint Kubiak’s offense in New Orleans last season, but rookie Tory Horton and several other young receivers outplayed him in camp and the preseason, making him expendable.
