After visiting with the team last month leading up to the 2025 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks continue to kick the tires on a possible reunion with veteran cornerback Shaquill Griffin heading towards the start of OTAs.

According to Jeremy Fowler and Brady Henderson of ESPN, the Seahawks remain in discussions with Griffin on a potential contract, though a signing isn’t considered imminent at this time. Per OverTheCap.com, the team has north of $34 million in cap space, so finances shouldn’t be a deterrent on striking a deal.

The 29-year old Griffin originally entered the league as a third-round pick for Seattle back in 2017, finding his way into the starting lineup as a rookie and taking the mantle as the team’s new No. 1 cornerback following the departure of Richard Sherman in the ensuing offseason. In four seasons with the team, he started 53 out of 57 games played, producing 249 tackles, six interceptions, and 42 pass breakups.

Proving to be one of general manager John Schneider’s better Day 2 selections value-wise, Griffin’s best season came in 2019 when he racked up 13 pass breakups for the Seahawks, earning a Pro Bowl selection for the first and only time of his career. After intercepting three passes in 12 games in 2020, he cashed in signing a lucrative multi-year deal with the Jaguars, but he lasted just two disappointing, injury-marred seasons in Jacksonville without a single interception before being released as a cap casualty in March 2023.

At a career crossroads, Griffin bounced around in 2023, seeing action in 13 games with the Texans and Panthers, generating 39 tackles and an interception. Latching on with the Vikings last season, he enjoyed a bit of a rebirth as a rotational reserve, finishing with 41 tackles, two interceptions, and four pass breakups while suiting up for all 17 games with a trio of starts. Per Pro Football Focus, he finished 19th among qualified cornerbacks allowing just a 76.2 passer rating when targeted by opposing quarterbacks.

Going into the 2025 season, the Seahawks have two of the best young cornerbacks in the NFC in Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen headlining a talented secondary, while Josh Jobe re-signed after being a revelation coming up from the practice squad and starting 10 games last season. But behind them, following the departures of Tre Brown and Artie Burns in free agency, they lack experienced depth, as second-year defender Nehemiah Pritchett and journeyman Shemar Jean-Charles would be next in line to play if an injury struck. Those two players have started a combined three games in the league.

From a long-term standpoint, Seattle also has question marks at cornerback with Woolen and Jobe set to become free agents next March and their respective futures with the franchise uncertain. Only Witherspoon and Pritchett remain under contract in 2026 among the cornerbacks with game experience on their roster and the Seahawks didn’t use any of their 11 draft picks on the position either, leaving undrafted signees Zy Alexander and Isas Waxter as the only other possibilities to play down the road.

Signing Griffin to a one-year deal wouldn’t help address potential concerns beyond next season in the event of Woolen and/or Jobe signing elsewhere, but he would immediately provide a crucial veteran insurance policy with extensive starting experience filling the role previously held by Brown and Burns to either compete against Jobe for one of the boundary spots or be ready to roll as a pinch hitter if needed.
