Reign Extend Star Defender Jordyn Bugg Through 2030
The Seattle Reign have made it a point to build around a promising young core over the past two seasons, and Thursday marked another key step in keeping that nucleus together. The Reign extended standout 20-year-old center back Jordyn Bugg through 2030, ensuring the 2025 Defender of the Year finalist will remain a stalwart in the back line.
It hasn't been the easiest of seasons for the young USWNT prospect, who missed the first eight games of 2026 with a hamstring issue she picked up on international duty. Bugg hasn't missed any of the 18 games since, as Seattle sits at 12-10-4 in the eighth and final NWSL Playoff spot. Friday's home game against the North Carolina Courage will mark Bugg's 50th appearance with the club.
Bugg joined the club in 2024 at just 17 years old alongside a 16-year-old Ainsley McCammon. Since then, both have blossomed into consistent starters, with Bugg taking the leap in 2025 while McCammon has done the same this season.
Playing alongside Reign legend Lauren Barnes last season, Bugg got to learn from the best while developing rapport with her current center-back partner in Phoebe McClernon.
Bugg, while not typically an attacker, scored a scorcher from outside the box at North Carolina in 2025 that was nominated for the FIFA Marta Award, a distinction given to the best-looking international goal of the season. In total, Bugg has totaled four goals in three seasons with Seattle.
Beyond that moment, Bugg established herself as one of the toughest center backs in the NWSL to make runs in behind. She plays beyond her years most times, with head coach Laura Harvey constantly raving about Bugg’s sound defensive play as she and McClernon are among the top defenders in the league in clearances per game.
In becoming one of the league’s best defenders almost immediately, Bugg helped Seattle improve from 13th in 2024 when she signed midway through the season and started only five games, to fifth in 2025 as she started 24 matches.
The move marks the latest in a string of extensions handed down by the Reign, as head coach Laura Harvey was extended through 2028 before the 2026 season, while leading scorer Maddie Mercado and impact wing back Ryanne Brown both inked deals through the 2027 campaign during this past summer.
Bugg was already a USWNT prospect when she signed with the team, and she was just called up to the USYNT for a U-23 camp in October. With the Reign in a sprint to the finish line with four games to go, they’ll need Bugg to be at her best to qualify for a second straight playoff berth.
