Sam Darnold Injury Leaves Seahawks With Troubling, Yet Intriguing QB Situation
Set to play their second game against the Cardinals without Sam Darnold, Drew Lock's ongoing elbow trouble has muddied up the Seahawks' quarterback situation. But while Lock potentially being out as well spells doom, there's reason to still be fascinated to see what Jalen Milroe can do.
RENTON, Wash. - The Seattle Seahawks know that they can win with Drew Lock under center to replace an ailing Sam Darnold. They already made it happen twice this year, including beating the Arizona Cardinals on the road in Week 2.
However, for those hoping to see history repeat itself when those same Cardinals come to Lumen Field on Sunday with Darnold unexpectedly ruled out due to quad/rib injuries suffered in a Monday Night Football loss to the Bears, away from the upcoming opponent, little resembles the situation from just seven weeks ago.
Coming off an exhilarating season-opening 13-10 win over the Patriots, Lock entered his first start in almost two years fully healthy, tossing three touchdowns to Jaxon Smith-Njigba to secure a 31-7 victory over the Cardinals in Glendale. But this time around, he has injury concerns of his own as he continues to battle through an elbow injury that has led to him being downgraded to emergency quarterback status behind Jalen Milroe each of the past two weeks.
Before a walkthrough practice on Wednesday, coach Mike Macdonald indicated Seattle hopes to have Lock back in the saddle on Sunday, expressing tempered optimism that he will be healthy enough to step up for Darnold again.
There's a catch, though. In reality, the Seahawks have no idea how much Lock will be actually be able to throw during practice this week, let alone whether or not he will be ready to play in a game against an aggressive Cardinals defense, meaning it could be Milroe starting a regular season game for the first time in his two-year NFL career.
