This summer, Emerald City Spectrum will be taking a look at the Washington State men's basketball roster leading up to a new season, breaking down all 14 players who are expected to suit up for the Cougars in 2025-26.

In part seven of our 14-part series, we profile junior guard Jerone Morton, a transfer from Morehead State who looks to bring a defensive edge and two-way versatility to the Cougars' backcourt.

### Jerone Morton, Guard, Junior

Morton arrives in Pullman as a junior transfer from Morehead State, where he developed into one of the team’s best players over two seasons. Originally from Winchester, Kentucky, Morton played his high school ball at George Rogers Clark High School and brings a mix of versatility, defensive ability, and playmaking to Washington State.

As a freshman at Morehead State, Morton provided limited production - averaging just 2.2 points in 12.9 minutes per game - but made a significant leap in his sophomore campaign. He became a consistent starter, averaging 29.5 minutes per game while scoring 10.4 points, dishing out 3.4 assists, and knocking down 37.7 percent of his three-point attempts. His ability to play both on and off the ball adds valuable flexibility to the Cougars’ rotation.

Despite Morehead State enduring a difficult season last year—ranking 328th in Kenpom—Morton stood out as a bright spot. He finished second on the team in scoring, and led the team in both assists and steals. His impact was also reflected in advanced metrics, as he ranked second among rotation players in box plus-minus, further reinforcing his all-around contributions.

Morton has also built a reputation as a strong on-ball defender, using his size and instincts to disrupt opposing guards with averaging over one steal a game last year. Given Washington State’s struggles on the defensive end last season, his presence could be an important piece of the program’s effort to reestablish a stronger identity on that side of the floor this season.

While the jump from the Ohio Valley Conference to the WCC will pose a challenge, Morton’s skill set should translate well. With his ability to handle the ball, knock down open shots, and defend at a high level, he’s poised to carve out a meaningful role off the bench. As the Cougars look to revamp their roster through the transfer portal, he could be a key piece in their defensive turnaround and should push for serious minutes right away.
