Preview: Cougars Prepare For Round 1 vs. Rival Oregon State in Corvallis

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Two programs searching for direction will meet up Saturday afternoon for the first of two Pac 12 matchups as the Washington State Cougars travel south to face the Oregon State Beavers at Reser Stadium.

Washington State (4-4) comes in with some renewed confidence after a steady 28-7 victory over Toledo. It wasn’t flashy, but it was the kind of performance the Cougars needed to stabilize after an up-and-down first half of the season. Quarterback Zevi Eckhaus continues to settle into his role leading the offense, showing flashes of poise while still searching for consistent rhythm. The real challenge for WSU has been balance — their running game has sputtered much of the year, and against a physical Oregon State front, that trend will need to change.

The Cougars’ defense, though, has quietly been their backbone. After allowing 30-plus points in several early losses, they’ve tightened up, holding recent opponents under three touchdowns per game, including ranked Ole Miss and Virginia. Linebacker play has improved, the pass rush has found life, and there’s a growing sense that this defense could carry them through November.

On the other sideline, Oregon State (1-7) enters the matchup under new leadership. Interim head coach Robb Akey took over after the firing of Trent Bray, and his first game at the helm produced a sigh of relief — a 45-13 win over an FCS opponent that finally snapped a brutal seven-game skid. The Beavers showed flashes of the physical, ground-and-pound style that once defined the program, led by running back Anthony Hankerson, who erupted for a big performance last week.

Still, the Beavers’ inconsistencies remain glaring. Defensively, they’ve struggled to get off the field on third down, and their secondary has been vulnerable to explosive plays. That’s an area Eckhaus and the Cougars’ air attack will look to exploit early and often on Saturday.

This matchup also carries emotional weight. Last season’s meeting was a 41-38 thriller that went Oregon State’s way, a game remembered for back-and-forth fireworks and late-game dramatics. Washington State hasn’t forgotten, and with bowl eligibility still in reach, the Cougars know this one could define their stretch run.

The key battle will likely come in the trenches. Can WSU finally establish a rushing attack to take pressure off Eckhaus? Can Oregon State’s offensive line replicate last week’s dominance against a far better defensive front? And perhaps most importantly — which team handles the emotion of a rivalry-like setting better?

Oddsmakers give Washington State a slight edge, listing the Cougars as a 3.5-point favorite with the total hovering around 47.5. Expect a scrappy, physical contest that may not be pretty, but will reveal plenty about both programs’ identities.

If the Cougars’ defense continues its recent rise and the offense avoids turnovers, they should have enough to pull away late. For Oregon State, this is about pride and proof — showing they can still compete in front of their home crowd. For Washington State, it’s about momentum, identity, and keeping postseason hopes alive.

In a matchup of two teams heading in different directions, the Cougars look ready to take another step forward, while the Beavers search for something to build on as the season winds down.
