The Washington State Cougars have added another intriguing talent through the transfer portal with the commitment of wing Jaylen Harrell, a former top-100 recruit who began his career at Providence.

Harrell’s freshman season with the Friars was limited to just six games due to injury, making him somewhat of a difficult transfer portal evaluation. In those appearances, he averaged 3.7 points and 0.7 rebounds in just over nine minutes per game, shooting an efficient 8-for-16 from the field and 3-for-11 from beyond the arc.

Harrell’s addition continues a clear trend in how Washington State, under head coach David Riley, is approaching roster construction. The Cougars have been aggressive in targeting former high-level recruits from power conference programs who are seeking expanded roles and consistent playing time. Harrell fits that mold alongside players like RJ Jones (Kansas State/TCU), Landji Dembele (UNLV/Iowa), Tyler Kropp (Northwestern), and Sebastian Akins (Denver/Wake Forest).

This strategy from Riley and his coaching staff reflects a calculated bet: that players who were once highly regarded prospects can thrive when given more opportunity in a new system.

Coming out of high school, Harrell drew significant interest from major programs, including Xavier, Rutgers, Alabama, and Virginia Tech. At 6-5 with solid length, he projects well as a wing at the two or three position. Offensively, his strengths are relatively clear, even with limited college tape. He is a capable catch-and-shoot option who can space the floor and operate effectively off movement, particularly running off screens. In Riley’s system, which emphasizes pace, spacing, and perimeter shooting, Harrell could carve out a role as a reliable scoring option early in his Washington State career.

However, the biggest question surrounding Harrell is on the defensive end. According to[ 247Sports scouting director Adam Finkelstein](https://247sports.com/player/jaylen-harrell-46142624/high-school-298542/?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com), Harrell’s “lack of footspeed can limit him at times,” and that concern showed up in his limited minutes at Providence. He posted one of the lowest defensive box plus-minus ratings on the team, highlighting the need for improvement. This becomes even more significant when considering Washington State’s recent struggles defensively. Over the past two seasons, the Cougars have really struggled on defense ranking 198th and 228th in the country defensively the past two seasons.

For Harrell, earning significant minutes may depend less on his scoring ability—which appears promising—and more on his defense. If he can improve his lateral quickness, he has the tools to become a more complete player in Pullman. Additionally, Washington State’s coaching staff will need to determine how best to support him, whether through scheme adjustments or lineup combinations that help mitigate defensive weaknesses.

Despite the uncertainties, Harrell represents a high-upside addition for a program in transition. After losing nearly their entire roster from the previous season—returning only walk-ons Dio Blakely and Dominik Robinson—the Cougars are essentially rebuilding from the ground up. The 2026–2027 roster now features a mix of transfers and returning players, including Eastern Washington transfer Casey Jones, high school commit Brayden Kyman, RJ Jones, Dembele, Kropp, Akins, Ronnie Harrison (East Texas A&M), Fraser Roxburgh (Manhattan), and Lazerek Houston (Central Missouri).

In that context, Harrell stands out as an emerging talent who could make an immediate offensive impact amongst a bunch of newcomers. His long-term ceiling, however, will likely be determined by how much he can grow defensively. If he can take that step forward, he has the potential to be a key contributor for Washington State as the Cougars look to reestablish themselves in a new Pac 12.
