Cougars Land In-State Standout Jaylen McLaughlin

Washington State continued to build for the future with the commitment of Bothell guard Jaylen McLaughlin, one of the top basketball prospects in the Evergreen State and now a member of the 2027 recruiting class.

The in-state standout announced his commitment to the Cougars, giving Washington State a quality recruiting victory while keeping one of the state's best young players close to home.

McLaughlin has quickly emerged as one of Washington's premier guards thanks to his ability to both score and create for his teammates. At 6-3, he has the versatility to play either guard position, making him a natural fit in head coach David Riley's up-tempo offensive system.

According to 247Sports, McLaughlin is the No. 2-ranked prospect in Washington's 2027 class. He also becomes Washington State's first in-state commitment since Dominik Robinson joined the Cougars as part of the 2025 recruiting class.

The commitment is also noteworthy in today's college basketball landscape. With the transfer portal becoming the primary avenue for roster building across the country, many programs have shifted much of their focus away from recruiting high school players. Washington State, however, showed that it remains committed to developing talent from the prep ranks by landing one of the state's top prospects during the July recruiting period.

McLaughlin chose the Cougars over offers from Arkansas State, Eastern Washington, Toledo, and Cal State Fullerton, giving WSU another recruiting win against several Division I programs while maintaining a grip on in-state talent.

Looking at McLaughlin’s rise in the recruiting rankings, his junior season demonstrated why he is one of the top prospects in the Northwest. A First Team All-League selection, McLaughlin averaged 29.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game while shooting 41% from the field, 36% from three-point range, and an outstanding 91% from the free-throw line.

With the transfer portal reshaping college basketball every offseason, it is far too early to predict what Washington State's roster will look like by the time McLaughlin arrives on campus in two seasons. However, landing one of the state's top prospects gives the Cougars a talented building block for the future and provides an encouraging start to their 2027 recruiting class.
