Washington State Blows Second-Half Lead in Crushing 17-16 Loss to Utah State
For two quarters, the Cougars appeared to be on the verge on a much-needed road win. But another second half collapse with two crucial offensive turnovers led to another disastrous result at Utah State.
Washington State found another way to lose Friday night.
The Cougars appeared to be in position to snap their losing streak after taking a 16-3 lead into halftime against Utah State. Instead, Washington State's offensive struggles continued, costly turnovers proved disastrous, and the Cougars watched another winnable game slip away in a 17-16 loss at Maverik Stadium.
Washington State falls to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in Pac-12 play. After a 26-6 loss to Fresno State last week, the Cougars desperately needed a response. For one half, they provided one, but the same issues that have plagued the team all season showed up again coming out of the break.
Washington State failed to score after halftime, lost two costly fumbles, and allowed Utah State to score 14 unanswered points to complete the comeback. The loss was another frustrating example of a team that cannot put together four complete quarters of football.
At this point, the Cougars' problems extend beyond a slow start or a difficult schedule. Washington State is struggling to execute offensively, protect the football, and finish games in all three phases. Washington State has one - yes, one - passing touchdown against an FBS opponent in six games. That's not going to cut it.
Takeaways from another frustrating defeat in Pac-12 play:
Washington State's Offense Disappears After Halftime
The Cougars managed just 16 points against a Utah State team that entered the game with a 1-4 record. Even with an early advantage and opportunities to control the game, Washington State could not find a way to put the Aggies away. Two turnovers down the stretch proved costly and the Cougars second half woes continued.
