The No. 6-seeded University of Washington women’s basketball team was on the precipice of a massive upset before surrendering its 10-point lead, allowing No. 3 TCU to force overtime and eventually end the Huskies’ season in a 62-59 second-round loss to the Horned Frogs on Sunday, March 22, at Schollmaier Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Had the Huskies won, they would’ve advanced to their first Sweet 16 since the 2016-17 season and just their second since 1994-95\.

Fresh off a dominant first-round victory over No. 11 South Dakota State, the Huskies were hoping to pursue a historic season. Instead, UW finished its season 22-11 overall in heartbreaking fashion.

### **Cold starts in fourth quarter, overtime cost Huskies**

UW entered the fourth quarter with a 42-33 lead in a defensive battle. Both teams had 10 or more turnovers, and even in a physical game, very few whistles were blown. But the Huskies looked in control and on a path to a huge upset.

Then TCU opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, trimming the Huskies’ lead to just two with eight minutes remaining in the game.

Huskies guard Sayvia Sellers stopped the bleeding with a 3-pointer, and UW managed to get it back to a seven-point difference.

The Horned Frogs kept up their defensive pressure, however, tying the game 49-49 with 2:32 left in the game before taking a two-point lead with just under two minutes left. It took a layup from Huskies freshman Brynn McGaughy with 14 seconds left to extend the game to overtime in a 51-51 tie.

For the second straight period, TCU scored the first seven points of overtime. The Huskies didn’t score for the first 2.5 minutes of the period.

Sellers cut the Horned Frogs’ lead to 62-59 with 42 seconds remaining, and UW had opportunities down the stretch. She had a would-be game-tying look just before the buzzer, but it was off. TCU survived by the skin of its teeth.

Olivia Miles, the Big 12 Player of the Year, nearly had another triple-double for the Horned Frogs, totaling 18 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Sellers totaled 18 points, six rebounds, five assists and a steal for the Huskies.

Three other UW players scored in double figures: Avery Howell (14 points), McGaughy (13) and Hannah Stines (10).

TCU will now await the winner of No. 2 Iowa and No. 10 Virginia in the Sweet 16\. The Huskies, although falling short of that mark, enjoyed their best season under head coach Tina Langley, who took over the program in 2021.
