It’s easy to look at the Washington Huskies 2026 football schedule and skip to the end.

While the last two games — home against defending national champion Indiana and on the road at nemesis Oregon — could determine UW’s College Football Playoff fate, the Huskies have to get there first.

Washington begins the football season with three non-conference snoozers, and ends with the types of games UW has been unable to compete in under Fisch through two seasons. The seven games in the middle are all winnable — Washington could well be favored in six of them — but Big Ten games are rarely easy.

The bottom line is Washington must go 6-1 during that stretch to have any hope at its first CFP berth of head coach Jedd Fisch’s tenure.

I’ll save official predictions for late August, but somehow I’ve managed to break a 12-game season up into five categories.

### Lose, and Coach’s Seat is on Fire

There are hot seats, and there are fire seats. If Washington loses any of the first three, UW football boosters will be calling for a Fisch fry.

**The Apple Cup, Sept 6:** The Cougars come to Big Ten country for the season-opening, Sunday Apple Cup — hold on, the ‘90s just called and asked me to double check my facts, because that can’t be right — as three touchdown underdogs.

Fisch is 1-1 in the rivalry game. Washington pulled away from a close game in Pullman last September to blow out Washington State 59-24, a year after the infamous Will Rogers option to the short side of Lumen Field loss in 2024.

The Cougars, on their third head coach in three seasons, simply do not have the claws needed to stay in a game at Husky Stadium. While it wouldn’t be Jimmy Lake against Montana bad, a loss in this game could send the season into a downward spiral.

**Utah State, Sept. 12:** The Aggies of the Pac-12 Conference — hold on, the ‘90s called to fact-check me again — visit Husky Stadium after finishing 4-4 in the Mountain West Conference last year, and 6-7 overall. If you’re a bettor, consider taking the overs on UW quarterback Demond Williams Jr. stats.

**Eastern Washington, Sept. 19:** A loss here would be the Jimmy Lake Montana comp.

### The Wisconsin Specials

So far, Big Ten teams have mostly struggled to figure out how to win while crossing seemingly deadly time zone lines multiple times on the way to football games. We saw this when UW had to overcome a 20-0 deficit at Maryland. And it became crystal clear when Washington went to Wisconsin as 10.5-point favorites and got beaten by the snow-aided Badgers. Two games on the 2026 schedule offer that potential.

**At Nebraska, Oct. 31:** Both teams will be coming off a bye after the Cornhuskers have lost to Indiana and Oregon (theoretically). Nebraska, probably ranked after a relatively tame first five games, will be looking to regroup against the Huskies. This shapes up as a scary Halloween game for the Huskies, though the bye could help mitigate the dreaded time zone issues.

**At Michigan State, Nov. 14:** Is that a snow flurry I see? A year after the Huskies saw a few snowflakes in Madison, Wisconsin, they’ll need to avoid a major slip in East Lansing, Michigan against a team that could well have five losses by then.

### Lose, and It’s an Unserious Football Season

Quite simply, home wins against Minnesota and Iowa, and on the road against Purdue, are musts for UW to show program growth in 2026\. But those games aren’t gimmies…

**Minnesota, Sept. 26:** The Golden Gophers aren’t bad, but the Huskies will likely enter this game ranked in the teens with just two home losses since the end of the 2021 season. The CFP hopes are all but gone with a home loss to Minnesota.

**Iowa, Oct. 9:** The Hawkeyes are going to do what they do — win 8-9 games and be a thorn in the side of most Big Ten teams. But, Iowa crosses multiple time zones six days after playing Ohio State. This is a game that a team with CFP hopes must win.

**At Purdue, Oct. 16:** While this could fall into the “Wisconsin Special'“ category, 2026 Purdue is no 2025 Wisconsin. The Badgers had some very good defensive pieces, and Purdue does not. Taking the Boilermakers and the points might not be the worst idea, but this would be a CFP-killing loss for the Huskies.

### Who’s for Real?

Washington, USC and Penn State all enter the 2026 season with high expectations. It seems unlikely all three will make the CFP. Who’s for real?

**At USC, Oct. 3:** This game won’t end Lincoln Riley’s job at USC, but it could deliver a serious body blow. Washington lines up second in a brutal six-game stretch for the Trojans — Oregon, Washington, at Penn State, at Wisconsin, Ohio State, at Indiana. We’ll see if Riley goes to Maryland for the team’s 11th game. I’ll be surprised if he’s wearing a USC visor in 2027\. (Enter Kalen DeBoer?)

There are no time zones to trip over, but Washington has a history of stumbling in L.A. The Huskies are 12-32 all-time on the road against the Trojans despite winning the last two (2023, 2015). ESPN currently has USC ranked 20th, and that will likely improve into the low teens against San Jose State, Fresno State, Louisiana and Rutgers before the Trojans host Oregon and Washington back-to-back weeks. Washington could travel south ranked a few spots ahead of USC, and this matchup will serve as an early prove-it game for both programs.

**Penn State, Nov. 7:** Remember that disaster of a Penn State season last year? Take a closer look, and this is a team that went 7-6\. Yes, James Franklin got canned less than a year after a CFP semifinal appearance, during a six-game losing streak. But this team has talent. After falling in a double overtime to Oregon, the 2025 Nittany Lions lost four of their next five games by five or fewer points. With former Iowa State coach Matt Campbell at the helm, a win at Washington could put Penn State in the driver’s seat for a CFP berth.

### Win One, and Maybe You’re In

**Indiana, Nov. 21:** To have a shot at the CFP, Washington will likely have to come into this game with no more than one loss, needing to at least split the final two to get in.

Though Indiana lost Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza among eight players selected in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Hoosiers are expected to be a playoff contender once again. This could well be a loser-out game for both teams.

**At Oregon, Nov. 28:** If the Huskies enter this game 10-1 with a win over Indiana, a close loss at Oregon likely wouldn’t be enough to knock them out of the CFP. But, UW can’t lose two straight by large margins and get in. This could be a play-in game for a 9-2 or 10-1 Washington team.

Unless they head to Eugene 11-0, the Huskies will at least have to hang in there with the Ducks to prove they’re CFP worthy. This game will also serve as a measuring stick for Jedd Fisch’s program. A year after getting drilled 49-21, the Huskies showed some progress by being down by less than a touchdown in the fourth quarter before falling 26-14 at Husky Stadium. We’ll find out a lot about the 2026 Huskies and what kind of quarterback Williams is, in this game.
