The UW football team looks to be headed to LA.

And, the Huskies had better start packing. Per a report from Brett McMurphy of on3.com, Washington will play Boise State in the [LA Bowl](https://labowl.sofistadium.com/?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com), 5 p.m. Dec. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif.

The full name of the bowl, this year, is “Bucked Up LA Bowl Hosted by Gronk.”

Neither Washington Athletics nor the LA Bowl had officially announced bowl opponents as of this article’s publication. Per a UW spokesperson, the bowl invitations will become official on Sunday — six days prior to the LA Bowl — and coach Jedd Fisch will likely hold a press conference soon after. Boise State (9-4) secured a spot in the game with a 38-21 win over UNLV in Friday’s Mountain West Championship game.

LA is where most thought the 8-4 Huskies would land. The Sun Bowl would normally have been a possibility, but Washington played there last season, losing 35-34 to Louisville, and bowls prefer to avoid hosting the same team in consecutive years. There was an outside chance at the Holiday Bowl on Jan. 2, but that spot appears to be going to 9-3 Arizona.

Though the Pac-12 Conference fell apart after the 2023 season, several bowls remain affiliated with traditional Pac-12 teams such as UW and Arizona.

Fisch said Wednesday that the team has been preparing for possible opponents given the short turnaround for the LA Bowl, which is on the first day of this year’s bowl game schedule.

The question for all bowl teams is: Who will play in the game? It has become common for players headed to the NFL or the transfer portal to opt out of non-playoff games.

“There’s some guys that might not want to play in the bowl game, and that’ll just free up opportunities for others,” Fisch said after the 26-14 loss to Oregon in the regular-season finale Saturday. “But I would expect most of our team to play in the bowl game.”

For the most part, we won’t speculate which specific players might opt out. On Thursday, center Landen Hatchett posted on X a post-op photo of himself, meaning he’s almost certainly out while recovering from surgery. He’d been wearing a cast on his right (snapping) hand the past few weeks.

A few players, including senior running back Jonah Coleman and senior edge Zach Durfee posted farewell messages, though they did not indicate whether or not they would play in a bowl game. Junior receiver Denzel Boston chose to walk on senior day, which would seem to indicate that he’s a least considering entering the NFL draft.

UW has a young roster, which means a majority of the healthy players are likely to compete in a bowl. Seniors not expected to be selected in the NFL draft might also play in the game for one last audition for a pro tryout. It’s typical for NFL prospects who feel relatively sure they are going pro to skip bowls in modern football.

Non-playoff bowl games are almost as much of a look-ahead to next season as a bow on the current one.

Those who have already indicated they’ll enter the transfer portal, such as wide receiver Audric Harris, might also be candidates to miss the LA Bowl. In some cases, we may not know until the game kicks off.

“It’s another opportunity to showcase your skills,” Fisch said. “It’s another opportunity to go out there and get another win. But, you know, every now and then, there’s a couple guys that opt not to play, and we wish them the best as well.”
