The Seattle Kraken just finished their fifth season in franchise history. For the third straight year, and fourth time in these five seasons, they missed the playoffs. Ron Francis has stepped down as president. Lane Lambert, as of now, remains the head coach.

This franchise needs some changes. They need some juice. They certainly need some offense. As a franchise stuck in the mud, it’s time to shake things up. Here are three moves the Kraken should make to reignite excitement among the fanbase.

### Extend Bobby McMann

This is a fairly obvious one. General manager Jason Botterill swung the trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs to acquire Bobby McMann at the trade deadline. The intent was to inject life and speed into the offensive attack for the Kraken. In some ways, it worked. Coaches and management praised his work ethic, seriousness about improvement, and seamless integration. His history with Lambert from the Kraken head coach’s time in Toronto certainly helped. He also is one of the fastest pure skaters in the NHL.

In 18 games with Seattle, McMann notched 14 points, which included a team-high 10 goals, which ranked 10th in the entire NHL over that timeframe. The next closest Kraken skater is Jared McCann, with *four.*

Given the fit with Lambert, and the instant offense McMann provided, it’s a no-brainer. He needs to remain a Kraken over the next several years.

### Use Draft Capital to Trade for Top-6 Forward

The Kraken offense was abysmal this year, ranking 28th in goals scored per game.

The Kraken sold off a lot of pieces during the 2024-2025 trade deadline. It earned him two first round picks. They have five picks in the first 102 selections. They have the firepower to go trade for a difference maker. The organization even said that is what they wanted to do with some of the draft capital they acquired over the last few years.

One move that would certainly cost Seattle a lot is for Matthew Knies, also from Toronto. He is a top six skater who has averaged over 60 points per season the last two years. Getting him to re-join his teammate McMann in Seattle would do wonders for this offense.

### Sign an Impactful Two-Way Defender

Jamie Oleksiak is set to be a free agent after being part of the Kraken blue line for the franchise’s first five seasons. He was one of the Kraken’s picks in their expansion draft. The Kraken will need to replace him along the defensive side of the ice.

Oleksiak was not known for his goal-scoring. He had just 11 goals over the last three full seasons. The Kraken need to sign a defenseman who can get the puck into the net more.

Cale Makar is currently set to be a free agent after the playoffs. Let’s put that pipe dream to bed. It would be a massive fumble of Biblical proportions if the Avalanche let him actually get to free agency.

Long-time Flames blueliner who was traded to Vegas at the deadline, Rasmus Andersson, would be a highly impactful defenseman. He scored 17 goals and racked up 47 points.

Another possible option is Capitals legend John Carlson, fresh off of a 60-point season between the Ducks and Capitals. There’s still some juice in the tank.

The Kraken currently have $75.6 million in cap space. They have room to make a sizable addition.
