One of the most respected offensive line coaches in the NFL, John Benton has coached 22 years in the league, including serving as an offensive line coach for six different franchises, earning a reputation as an outstanding teacher with a prioritized focus on fundamentals.

Taking his coaching chops to the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle Seahawks have entrusted Benton with turning around one of the NFL’s worst offensives lines from a season ago, and he will be put to the test working with nearly unchanged personnel. Among the players set to return, center Olu Oluwatimi as well as guards Anthony Bradford, Christian Haynes, and Sataoa Laumea remain on their rookie contracts after being drafted by the organization in the previous two seasons, giving the seasoned assistant a young nucleus to mold.

In part one of our “The Benton Effect” video series, I revisit Benton’s illustrious coaching career at his previous five stops as an offensive line coach to explore how his presence influenced the play of guards and centers in his first year with each team compared to the prior year before his arrival, including a four-year stint with the 49ers and last season with the Saints, through Pro Football Focus grades and statistical charting.
