The Seattle Storm have waived rookie No. 14 overall pick Taina Mair, [per the WNBA transaction wire](https://www.wnba.com/players/transactions?transaction=&team=all&month=0&ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com). Mair is the first 2026 draft pick that the Storm has waived.

Waiving Mair [brings the Storm down to 15 players](https://www.emeraldcityspectrum.com/home/projecting-storm-final-roster-after-first-cuts), which still puts them three away from reaching the final 12-player roster limit. The deadline for cutting to 12 players is on Thursday, May 7, before the team’s season opener the next day.

Mair is somewhat of a surprising cut, though it’s still possible the Storm are planning to try and bring her back in a developmental roster spot. Seattle will have to wait and see if Mair clears waivers before they can try and re-sign her.

It’s a brutal yet common system for developmental or practice squad-type players. They must first be waived, then re-signed. But it’s possible Mair just didn’t make the overall 14-player cut.

### **What it means for Storm**

Attempting to stash Mair is the only thing that makes sense for the Storm here. She’s been everything they could have expected of her through two preseason games, playing 29 minutes and totaling four points, six rebounds, nine assists and one steal.

Mair was never going to be a score-first point guard in the WNBA, but she proved she can still distribute on offense, put her body on the line on defense and battle for rebounds.

Waiving her is especially risky, as pure point guards aren’t easy to find. Trying to ease her into playing time behind starting point guard Natisha Hiedeman seemed like the best option, but it’s possible Mair now lands with another team.

We can’t make declarations about what happens to other Storm players now without knowing whether they will be bringing Mair back. But it does mean that Zia Cooke and Lexie Brown are completely safe, if they weren’t already.

#### **Current roster locks (11)**

F/C Dominique Malonga

C Stefanie Dolson

C Ezi Magbegor

F/C Awa Fam Thiam

G/F Katie Lou Samuelson

G/F Jordan Horston

G Flau’jae Johnson

G Jade Melbourne

G Natisha Hiedeman

G Lexie Brown

G Zia Cooke

#### **Roster bubble players**

*\* denotes player eligible for developmental spot*

F/C Mackenzie Holmes\*

F Grace VanSlooten\*

G Jaelyn Brown\*

G/F Rennia Davis

One player among the above four will fill the final slot on the roster. It’s most likely to be either Holmes or VanSlooten, considering the Storm need extra frontcourt depth with Fam overseas and Magbegor sidelined.

Davis is the best player there, but she may fall victim to that needed depth. The Storm internally may not be as high on Davis as some are externally.

Head coach Sonia Raman and general manager Talisa Rhea have four more days to decide what direction they are going to go with the final roster. But regardless of what happens, this team will be better than previously expected.
