The Seattle Sounders may be stumbling, but you can throw out form and records when rivalries emerge.

The Rave Green (12-9-9 W-L-D, fifth) will host a tough No. 2 Vancouver Whitecaps (16-6-8) squad on Saturday night to kick off the first leg of two games against Cascadia rivals — No. 7 Portland comes to Lumen Field on Oct. 4.

Seattle is 0-2-1 in its last three matches since claiming its first Leagues Cup title on Aug. 31, but should have a rare upper hand on the fixture-congestion front. The Sounders will finally have the advantage of rest, as Vancouver drew with Portland 1-1 on Wednesday while Seattle is coming off [a devastating 2-1 loss to Austin](https://www.emeraldcityspectrum.com/home/sounders-austin-fc-recap-sept-21-2025) on Sunday night. Vancouver came into the week with three straight MLS wins, including a 7-0 thrashing of an Eastern-Conference-leading Philadelphia Union side on Sept. 13, as it continues its bid for a Supporters’ Shield.

With Bundesliga legend Thomas Müller potentially leading the charge, pending injury concerns, and finding his groove with his new squad, Seattle looks like it will be plenty busy trying to get on track on Saturday night.

### Matchup History

The last time these two met in early June, Vancouver didn't have Müller and Seattle was still finding the offensive identity it would solidify after a heartening run at the Club World Cup a week later.

That being said, it was a 3-0 drubbing at BC Place by the Whitecaps that saw Nouhou and Jon Bell pick up red cards. Nouhou’s ejection came on a 52nd-minute frustration foul on a promising Vancouver chance in which he pulled a man down by the shoulders, while Bell tripped a man up three minutes later on another runout. Bell's was far less egregious, as the two players had their legs tangled, but the damage was done.

With nine men left to stage the comeback, Seattle's 1-0 deficit turned into a 3-0 hole by the game's end, although Vancouver generated just 1.9 expected goals. That discrepancy was due in part to an absolute golazo from outside the box by Vancouver's Daniel Rios to put it out of reach.

Vancouver also played a five-man backline for the first time this season in that game —something they haven't gone back to since June.

At the end of the day, though, that was well over three months ago, with circumstances that are unlikely to be replicated. The more transferable issue for Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer and company will be the 0.6 expected goals generated by his squad in the loss. Seattle's offense has slowed down since a blazing hot July and August, and playing this stingy Vancouver defense will certainly test it.

### Vancouver Overview

The Whitecaps are coming off a thrilling draw in which the only goal they allowed came on a stunning strike from outside the box. Long story short, this is a team that relishes in its ability to keep opponents off the board — Vancouver has put together 13 shutouts in 30 MLS games and has allowed just 32 goals for a league-best mark.

Keeper Yohei Takaoka made the All-Star team as a coach's selection, but he's only logged 71 saves in 30 games started with a solid 73.1% save rate. Takaoka is more of an insurance policy on a team that doesn't get in many accidents.

Vancouver has allowed just 33.7 expected goals, second-lowest in MLS, thanks to a talented unit all around. Defender Tristan Blackmon was voted an All-Star, while midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, another All-Star, is one of the most productive tacklers in the league.

What may be most impressive about this Whitecaps side is their ability to maintain above-average production on the offensive end without their top scorer in USMNT talent Brian White. White has been dealing with a lingering hamstring injury and was able to return for the Wednesday game against Portland — he came on in the 60th minute and netted a goal in the 88th to help the Whitecaps secure a last-minute 1-1 draw.

Müller is also dealing with health issues of his own, as the veteran has an adductor issue that prevented him from traveling with the team to their recent win over Kansas City and from participating in Wednesday’s draw. Müller has scored four goals in his past two appearances, netting a hat trick in that 7-0 drubbing against Philadelphia. While his status for Seattle is unclear, Schmetzer and co. will need to plan for the superstar.

Potentially without Müller, Vancouver may need to lean on its league-leading defense to extend its unbeaten run of five matches. Müller’s ability to connect his new team with savvy passing has taken this offense to new heights, but with White back in the equation, they should be competitive on that end regardless of Müller’s status. After all, this is a team generating the second-highest expected goals in the league (55.7) despite missing key pieces for extended periods.

### Seattle Overview

The Sounders are coming off a demoralizing loss in which Austin FC took them down 2-1 on the final opportunity of the game in stoppage time. After the defeat, players like Paul Rothrock expressed that they felt like the team took a step forward compared to a blown lead against the LA Galaxy in [a 2-2 draw](https://www.emeraldcityspectrum.com/home/sounders-draw-la-galaxy-trap-game-key-players-return) and a[ 3-1 loss against a relatively unfamiliar Inter Miami squad](https://www.emeraldcityspectrum.com/home/messi-revenge-miami-leagues-cup-retribution-seattle-sounders).

Nevertheless, the Sounders left goals on the board, finishing with just one score on a night in which they compiled 2.9 expected goals. Seattle hesitated with good looks at the goal — something that won't fly against a more than competent Vancouver defensive unit.

"I would say we haven't played a complete game," Schmetzer said about his team's recent form after Wednesday's training. "The consistency that we had there for a while, that's gone missing."

Also missing? Mexican All-Star midfielder Obed Vargas and American defender Reed Baker-Whiting.

Both have been swept away by U-20 World Cup duties in Chile for the next two matches at least, leaving some new problems for the Sounders to solve. Schmetzer said the absences have forced his staff into some "tough choices," as the veteran skipper may need to ease a recovering João Paulo back from a meniscus injury soon. Schmetzer clarified that the idea of having a veteran presence like João Paulo step in for Vargas could hold the fort down in key moments, but don't expect the Brazilian to play full games due to his recovery schedule. Younger guys like Danny Leyva and Snyder Brunell should see some consideration on that front.

Vargas' midfield partner, Cristian Roldan, is the heart and soul of the Sounders, as his 46 dribbler tackles continue to lead MLS. But the wear of a busy few months is showing up in his game. Roldan has had some costly mistakes with the ball and just hasn't been as sharp in this skid, as Schmetzer continues to play him the full 90 with every game taking on such importance.

Meanwhile, the offensive slump of just four goals in three games (which constitutes a slump by this team's standards) has pushed his staff toward evaluating the efficacy of a two-forward lineup.

MLS analysts have pointed to the two-forward path for Seattle for a few weeks, as reserve striker Danny Musovski is leading this team in goals while all-time Sounders leading scorer Jordan Morris is back from a shoulder injury and a regular in the rotation. Schmetzer clarified that changing from the 4-2-3-1 lineup that Seattle has run in all but two fixtures since June would take some training, however. It may be prudent to save that change for a less prominent matchup, but it may be the ace up Schmetzer's sleeve come gametime.

Despite the opposite forms of these teams, Seattle has something to play for — the Sounders can clinch a playoff spot with a win or a draw.

### The Verdict

Seattle has had, relatively speaking, plenty of time to prepare for this one. It has a chance to completely put this slump behind it with a win. This is the stingiest defense in MLS, and Schmetzer couldn't ask for a better platform for his squad to get back to scoring in bunches against.

The Sounders need to be decisive, and the loss of Obed Vargas should not preclude this squad from finding the net. Albert Rusnák is back in the mix with other connectors like Jesús Ferreira working the middle. With those playmakers working their magic, it’ll be up to Musovski, Morris, Georgi Minoungou and potentially Osaze De Rosario to get the ball on target with intention.

Realistically speaking, Seattle should be able to compete for a draw on its home turf to get into the playoffs and build up some confidence. If Seattle drops another game with teams like Austin and Portland on its heels, the Sounders can practically kiss their hopes goodbye of tracking down No. 4 LAFC for homefield advantage in the MLS Cup Playoff first round. They’ll have their hands full just trying to get into the Big Dance.

Schmetzer feels the heat, and he let members of the media know it.

"We've got a short runway left, we gotta get our act together."
