Seattle Seawolves flanker Devin Short announced his retirement from pro rugby in an Instagram post on Monday, Jan. 12, 2026\. It is unknown why the 27-year-old Short decided to leave the game, but the retirement brings an end to an MLR original’s career. According to the North American Rugby Database (NARDb), Short racked up 77 caps, eight tries, 2296 meters, and 636 tackles during his eight seasons in the league, playing for the San Diego Legion, NOLA Gold, and Seattle Seawolves.

A dynamic and quick tackler, Short played at both flanker positions in 2025 but was especially noticeable on the openside, with that dynamism coming into good use for a Seawolves team that often needed someone to stop a breakaway. After Charles Elton’s mid-season return, Short’s main role became that of a substitute number six, filling in for Huw Taylor during the back half of matches.

While the Seawolves have brought in back row help in the offseason in the form of first-round draftee Tia’i Vavao and veteran back rower Paddy Ryan, Short’s retirement leaves potential questions to the future effectiveness of a unit that held its own through much of the 2025 season.
