Seattle Torrent Name Captain Heading Into Inaugural Season

The Seattle Torrent have officially handed the “C” to one of the most recognizable forces in women’s hockeyin Hilary Knight. For most fans, this move likely doesn’t feel like a surprise as much as it feels like a statement of a team declaring exactly who they want to be.

Knight, already a legend in the sport, has spent more than a decade redefining what it means to be an elite forward. She’s an Olympic gold medalist, multiple-time world champion, and one of the most productive scorers in international hockey history. In fact, she is the tournament’s all-time leader in goals, assists, and points, and holds the record for most Olympic games played in by a U.S. women’s hockey player. 

But beyond the stats,Knight has been the heartbeat of every locker room she’s walked into - fierce, funny, competitive to the bone - and impossible to ignore on or off the ice.

So why her? Why now?

For the expansion Torrent, the decision came down to a mix of leadership, consistency, and intangibles brought to the table by Knight that shifts a room. She’s the player who stays after practice so rookies feel supported, then turns around and scores twice the next night because she hates losing more than she loves winning. She carries herself with a calm, veteran confidence, but she’s also fiery enough to drag an entire bench into a game with one big shift.

"As a trailblazer in our sport, I can’t think of someone better to be the first-ever captain of the Seattle Torrent," general manager Meghan Turner said. "Hilary will set the tone for this team and this organization in our inaugural season. We’re excited to see her leadership on full display.”

Knight’s also been one of the most vocal ambassadors for the growth of women’s hockey—pushing for equity, visibility, and opportunities long before it was convenient. Naming her captain signals the organization’s desire to stand for something bigger than a season’s win-loss record, though the player herself will certainly have a focus on winning as many games as possible.

As the Torrent move into a new chapter with fresh faces, rising young talent, and a fanbase ready for the next step on the ice, Knight becomes the steadying star at the center of it all. Her resume speaks for itself, but her impact is about more than awards. It’s about expectation, culture, standards.

And with Knight wearing the “C” on her jersey, the Torrent just set the bar high to kickstart the franchise.
