The WNBA Draft has come and gone, and the Seattle Storm began training camp on April 27\. They will play a preseason game against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, May 4, before beginning the regular season on the road at the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday, May 17\.

We already [profiled all 12 Seattle players](https://www.emeraldcityspectrum.com/home/seattle-storm-roster-roundup-can-nneka-ogwumike-keep-rolling-in-14th-season) who weren’t expected to be suspended due to injury. Before the regular season begins and the Storm’s roster is finalized, we will [profile each of the team’s four draft picks](https://www.emeraldcityspectrum.com/home/seattle-storm-roster-roundup-will-madison-conners-shooting-ability-earn-her-a-roster-spot): forward/center Dominique Malonga (No. 2 overall), point guard Serena Sundell (No. 26), shooting guard Madison Conner (No. 29) and guard/forward Jordan Hobbs (No. 34).

Largely considered a steal in this year’s draft, Sundell was projected by many as a first-round pick. Instead, she slipped to the beginning of the third round, where the Storm were able to select her. Is Sundell a shoo-in to make the roster and immediately contribute?

### **Background**

Sundell (6-foot-2) played her prep career at Maryville High School in Missouri. A multi-sport athlete, Sundell excelled in basketball — finishing her high school career as Maryville’s all-time leading scorer with 2,358 points. Sundell averaged 25.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 3.1 steals and 1 block as a senior, falling one win short of a state championship. She committed to Kansas State as part of the 2021 recruiting class.

Immediately stepping into a starting role, Sundell [became one of Kansas State’s most prolific players](https://www.kstatesports.com/sports/womens-basketball/roster/serena-sundell/11858?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com). She played and started 139 games, the most by any player in both categories, and logged the most assists (811) in a career in school history. Sundell dished 272 assists during the 2024–25 season, the most in the NCAA.

In addition to her passing, Sundell has grown as a scorer throughout her collegiate career. She totaled 14.1 points per game last season, including a season-high 27 points against TCU on Feb. 5\. Sundell earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors in her junior and senior seasons and helped lead the Wildcats to their first Sweet 16 appearance in 23 years last season.

The Storm selected Sundell No. 26 overall, both ending her slide in the draft while also adding the player who could be the future leader of their backcourt.

### **Best Case Scenario**

Skylar Diggins isn’t relinquishing her starting point guard role this season, at least not without a massive shake-up to the lineup. That puts a ceiling on what a top-tier season would be for Sundell with no team injuries but still leaves room for her to quickly ascend to a priority bench role. If Sundell makes the final roster, there’s a very good chance she’s the immediate backup at point guard for Diggins — a situation that would thrust her into about 15 minutes per game.

In that role, expect Sundell to be a facilitator who scores when opportunities are present. The Storm are trying to fill their lack of shooters via other means, but Sundell is a better scorer than most think. Even averages of 5 points and 4 assists per game would be a stellar, realistic scenario as a rookie.

### **Worst Case Scenario**

Unfortunately, there is still a reality where Sundell isn’t with Seattle this season. Nine of the Storm’s current 16 players are essentially roster locks, with the remaining seven competing for what will likely be two spots. Sundell is in that group of seven but is certainly closer to a lock than the other rookies and training camp contract players.

### **What to Expect in 2024**

Sundell should be on the roster, and she should have a role as a rookie. It’s hard to see her sliding to the Storm in the third round and head coach Noelle Quinn not doing everything she can to find a role for her. Sundell is one of the best passers to come out of college basketball as of late, and Diggins playing for the Storm beyond 2025 isn’t a certainty. This is the best chance Seattle has to find its point guard of the future.

Seattle’s current rookie class highlights how shameful it is that WNBA teams have such few systems at their disposal to draft, develop and produce quality pro players over multiple seasons. At least one of the Storm’s third-round picks will be waived, and all may have the potential to be quality professional basketball players. Ideally, Seattle could keep them all, even if it doesn’t project them contributing this season.

Sundell has the best chance to contribute this season in a rotational role behind Diggins. She is the most WNBA-ready among the three and could provide a huge boost with her passing even if her other skills take some time to develop.
