Sounders Decimate Revolution on the Road, Reintroduce Themselves as Playoff Contenders
The Seattle Sounders entered a Saturday road bout with the red-hot New England Revolution on an eight-game unbeaten run, and proved it wasn't a fluke with a 3-0 W. Seattle got goals from Hassani Dotson, Dejan Joveljic, and Paul Arriola while managing a clean sheet as it remains in the playoff race.
A Samuel Adams beer bottle sat on the table as Brian Schmetzer addressed media on Saturday night.
One could say the Boston-based brew was earned – his Seattle Sounders squad went to Foxborough and beat a second-place New England Revolution squad 3-0 for its first MLS road win in over six months. With the result, the Sounders became the fastest club in league history to reach 100 road wins as goals from Hassani Dotson in the 15th, Dejan Joveljić in the 74th and Paul Arriola in the 81st spelled out arguably the best win Seattle has netted this season.
The win was Seattle's fourth straight, bringing its unbeaten streak to nine after losing eight straight MLS matches throughout the summer. As of Saturday night, the Sounders remain in seventh place behind LAFC with a game in hand.
The Sounders were coming off three straight wins against the worst the Western Conference has to offer, and relied on a last-second Cristian Roldan winner to carry them past last-place Kansas City last Thursday. To say that playing at New England would be a real test would be putting it lightly.
Schmetzer, beer in hand, suggested his team passed this time.
"This was a statement win," Schmetzer said. "It wasn't just a smash-and-grab… We outplayed them."
