Lumen Field has already hosted European champion Paris Saint-Germain and Spanish powerhouse Atletico Madrid this summer, but Sunday's matchup has different feeling to it. The Seattle Sounders will welcome one of the all-time greats in Lionel Messi and his Inter Miami squad with a Leagues Cup title on the line. Miami also boast former European soccer greats like Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba

It'll be the first time Seattle hosts Messi since he came to the Emerald City in 2009 at age 22 for an international friendly with his longtime club, Barcelona. The Sounders, who have closed the upper bowl for most matches this season, including Leagues Cup games, opened it as prices skyrocketed for a rare chance to see an international superstar play for a trophy.

The team has reported 50,000 tickets sold as of Friday morning, demolishing the 22,600 in attendance for Seattle's 7-0 win over Cruz Azul in July in the Leagues Cup group stage. My favorite anecdote is that a fan I know bought a solid ticket in the lower bowl for this game about 10 days ago for $20.

That ticket's price shot to $450 as it became clear that Seattle would top the LA Galaxy on Wednesday and host to host Messi and company.

The get-in price to this game is hovering around $175 according to Ticketmaster. It's that serious.

There's no denying, this game is the hottest ticket in town this weekend. But it won't be without its fair share of drama either. Seattle is missing some key pieces and will need to continue what has been one of the best forms this club has ever been in if it hopes to beat the 2024 Supporters' Shield champs.

### Matchup History

The Sounders' first and only matchup of the year with Inter Miami is coming up in just a few weeks on Sep. 16 in Miami, but this is a brand new team in the Eastern Conference - the franchise started playing 2020\. As such, the Sounders have only faced the squad one time, a loss in 2022 when that squad's main draw was Premier League and USMNT talent DeAndre Yedlin.

This isn't the same team, and Seattle might as well be playing a Liga MX team considering how sparse its encounters have been with the now internationally recognized team. One thing's for sure, Seattle will become very familiar with this team over the next 20 days.

### Inter Miami Overview

The biggest story with this team, no surprise, is its star power.

Messi, Suarez, and Alba have years of rapport dating back to their time at Spanish giant Barcelona, and they've put that to good use in the present. Messi is averaging over a goal per 90 minutes this season and is second in MLS scoring with 19 goals despite missing six games. Suarez is tied for third in assists with 10 while Alba has five.

Despite the fact that all three stars are over the age of 36, they get busy with the ball.

Messi is known as one of the best ball handlers in history, as his individual runs have swung countless Miami games from losses to results. Once again, despite playing just 19 games, he's 10th in the league in progressive carries while Alba is one of the best runners without the ball, having received over 176 progressive passes this season.

Miami put it all together in the waning moments of its Wednesday semifinal against Orlando City, in which it scored three goals in just over 20 minutes against a 10-man lineup. The signature moment of the comeback saw Alba and Messi run the opposing 18 perfectly with a series of passes to net Messi the go-ahead goal late.

In Leagues Cup play, Suarez leads the field in assists (3) and shots (19) while Alba has the most "key passes" (15) of any player (via Leagues Cup). Suarez also had a brace off two penalty kicks in the quarterfinal against Tigres that ended up deciding the game as his world-class ability is still a major threat behind Messi.

Seattle will have to work fast to try and disrupt years of inherent connection between these stars.

Sergio Busquets also played alongside that trio at Barcelona for years and joined Inter Miami alongside Messi in 2023\. He's right up there with the best players in the league in passing, as he's already over 175 progressive passes this year as a midfielder.

"Messi's a complete different beast and then Suarez is a completely different beast and then Alba is completely different beast and Busquets is class," Schmetzer said when asked if Miami compares to any of the Club World Cup teams Seattle faced. "It's just different."

And one would be remiss to preview Miami without mentioning their latest European acquisition in Atletico Madrid attacking mid Rodrigo De Paul, who has plenty of connection with Messi through their time on the Argentinian national team - which is the reigning World Cup champion.

De Paul is still figuring his way into this lineup, but has two assists in three Leagues Cup games as well as two assists in two MLS games. De Paul was still with Atletico when the Club World Cup was happening in June and played 65 minutes in a 3-1 win over Seattle, as he's one of the few Inter Miami players that the Sounders have really face recently.

All this firepower has amounted to Miami tying Orlando City for most MLS goals with 54 in just 25 games while Miami is tied with Seattle for most Leagues Cup goals at 12\. Seattle (13.73) and Miami (12.57) are also first and second in expected goals.

But if the Club World Cup was a turning point for Seattle's season because of how the Sounders played against the best competition in the world, Rave Green fans can take solace in the past. After all, Inter Miami lost 4-0 to a PSG squad that Seattle competed with and ultimately lost 2-0 to.

The main takeaway when evaluating this Miami squad is, yes they have star power, but chemistry is what fuels big moments. You can't replicate the combined decades of relationships this team's stars have forged together, and Seattle will have to be at its sharpest in stopping that.

### Seattle Overview

Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer wasn't going for any of that after Friday's practice. He gave plenty of props to Miami's stars, but his admiration for the superstars was simply overweighed by his confidence in his guys - who have faced the world's best this summer already.

"Messi is arguably the best player the world has ever seen, but we have Paul Rothrock and we have Jackson Ragen and we have Snyder Brunell and we have Andrew Thomas and we have Pedro (de la Vega)," Schmetzer said with a chuckle. "We've got good players too."

The Sounders may not have Nouhou for this match, but there is steady production in Seattle's defense to try and get a handle on Miami. Cristian Roldan is leading the MLS with 45 tackles this season and is sixth in blocked shots (42) despite being a midfielder.

Obed Vargas was Seattle's only All-Star selection and his connection with Roldan in the midfield has formed one of the most disruptive defensive tandems in the league.

"You're seeing a player, who in the 88th minute when we're down a guy, still had the strength, speed and power to go past six playesr," Schmetzer said of Vargas' late run against the Galaxy that resulted in a saved shot. "He has another gear."

In the attack, Seattle will need to lean on a young Osaze De Rosario while leading goal scorer Danny Musovski has been suspended for the rest of the tournament. De Rosario scored a goal in which he caught a pass from himself against LA and bullied through defenders, but missed a few opportunities to score 1-on-1 against the keeper.

One concerning trend has been Seattle's discipline. Musovski was tossed from the Leagues Cup quarterfinal for losing his composure with a ref while Nouhou saw a straight red for a double-legged tackle in which he got the ball first. Musovski's red can be chalked up to temper, but Nouhou's was a caution to Seattle in playing with controlled aggression.

The Sounders went through the appeals process to try and get Nouhou back for Sunday, but Schmetzer confirmed that wouldn't happen.

### The Verdict

Brian Schmetzer is confident in his defense, and he has reason to be.

Seattle's talent constantly falls under the radar despite the club's success, and defenders like Yeimar and stars like Cristian Roldan will get a chance to show the world what they're about when tasked with shutting down some of the best players in the world.

Despite Miami's age, they play like a much younger team thanks to their isolated dribbles. It'll be about individual discipline in the 18 to limit moments of brilliance as well as overall discipline - Seattle cannot afford to finish this game this game with 10 men.

On the offensive end, the Sounders will need some touch. They have struggled to finish some solid opportunities recently, and players like Pedro de la Vega will need to use their talents to finish close opportunities.

Inter Miami is in the middle of the pack in opponent xG, but the Sounders will need to find the net at a high clip in the event that Messi and company wakes up late again.

This may be a chance to win a trophy, but it's just another game for young guys like De Rosario, Vargas, Reed Baker-Whiting, Danny Leyva and others to show the world they belong.

With a sold-out stadium and millions of eyes on Seattle come Sunday night, the Sounders will have a chance to fill out their trophy case to cap a historic summer.
