Shaking up the back end of their roster prior to Friday’s second exhibition game against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Seattle Seahawks signed undrafted rookie fullback Wesley Steiner following an impressive tryout workout.

In a corresponding move, Seattle waived second-year linebacker Michael Dowell, who had re-signed with the team earlier this month with starting linebacker Tyrice Knight nursing a knee injury and Ernest Jones away for personal reasons.

Interestingly, Steiner has never previously played fullback, as he spent his entire time at Auburn and Washington State as a linebacker and special teams stalwart. In five collegiate seasons with the Tigers and Cougars, who he joined as a graduate transfer in 2024, he produced 98 combined tackles, five quarterback pressures, four tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.

But despite modest production and limited starting experience, Steiner turned in a phenomenal pro day workout, including running a blazing 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds and posting a 39-inch vertical jump at 5-11, 235 pounds. Adjusting his position to fullback, he scored in the 95th percentile historically with a 9.57 Relative Athletic Score, and he was still in the 93rd percentile as a linebacker.

With those athletic traits and his special teams background, the Raiders signed Steiner as an undrafted free agent and he participated in the team’s rookie minicamp before being released a few weeks later. He has remained unsigned ever since, but now the Seahawks will be the latest team to take a look at him, intrigued by his athletic traits with a different position in mind.

Steiner will join a Seattle roster already including two fullbacks, with fifth-round pick Robbie Ouzts expected to be the starter right out of the gate and third-year veteran tight end Brady Russell also capable of playing out of the backfield in a pinch. The decision to add another player to the mix at the position backs up coach Mike Macdonald’s comments earlier this week that the team primarily views Russell as a tight end at this point, and for the final two preseason games, it makes sense to have another body who can take on the physical work that comes with playing fullback.

If Steiner impresses enough in his limited auditions, given the importance of the fullback in offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak’s scheme and the value of special teams play in the league, it’s possible he could make a late push for a practice squad spot. But like any signing that happens this late in August, it will be an uphill battle with him likely being brought on to help fulfill preseason snaps in the next two games.
