With their offseason program all wrapped up, the Seattle Seahawks will open training camp at the VMAC on July 23, meaning the start of the upcoming season will be here before fans have a chance to blink.

In preparation for year number two under coach Mike Macdonald, I’ll be detailing every member of the Seahawks 90-man roster over the next several weeks, dishing out fun facts, exploring best and worst case scenarios, and predicting what to expect from each player entering the 2025 campaign.

Joining a group featuring plenty of experience as well as several other incoming rookies, will undrafted rookie Marshall Lang be able to stand out as a surprise in Seattle’s overhauled tight end unit?

### Marshall Lang

**Height/Weight**: 6-4, 249 pounds

**2024 Stats**: 11 receptions, 115 yards, one touchdown

Earning Third-Team All-State in Ohio during his senior season at St. Xavier High School, Lang garnered three-star distinction as a recruit and landed in Evanston as one of the Wildcats top recruits for the Class of 2020\. Seeing snaps early, he suited up in five of Northwestern’s nine games in a COVID-abbreviated freshman season before taking over as a starter the following season. Though he only caught 11 passes as a sophomore, he turned three of those opportunities into touchdowns, providing a red zone threat for an offense that struggled to finish drives in 2021.

During five years on campus at Northwestern, Lang never emerged as one of the team’s top pass catching targets, but he provided consistency as a capable receiver when called upon, catching 15, 11, and 11 passes over his final three collegiate seasons. He also played a key role in the Wildcats’ run game as a blocker, utilized as an inline tight end along with working out the slot and as an H-back, along with ample special teams work. After starting 21 games for the Wildcats and wrapping up his career as a graduate student, he signed with the Seahawks as a priority free agent and will now have an opportunity to compete against several other incoming rookies when the team reports for training camp in July.

**Fun Fact**: During his pro day workout, Lang impressed in several athletic testing metrics, including a 4.25 short shuttle that put him in the 98th percentile among tight ends dating back to 1987, per Relative Athletic Score.

**Best Case Scenario**: Building off of a stellar mandatory minicamp, Lang surprises as a receiver catching four passes and a touchdown during the preseason from third-round pick Jalen Milroe while also blocking well, leading to a spot on the practice squad after being waived in final roster cuts.

**Worst Case Scenario**: Lacking the pass catching pedigree or size to consistently hold up in the trenches as an inline blocker, Lang receives a handful of snaps in three exhibition games with fellow undrafted rookie Nick Kallerup outperforming him, leading to his release without a practice squad spot offered.

**What to Expect in 2025**: At least athletically, Lang has some NFL-caliber traits, and when it comes to his lackluster numbers as a receiver at the college level, Northwestern’s poor quarterback play and shaky pass game in general certainly made a difference. After snagging several catches down the seam during Seattle’s offseason program, it wouldn’t be hard to envision that he could have had much better numbers with another program that emphasized throwing to the tight end more often and had more stability under center.

Nonetheless, Lang didn’t exactly land in the ideal spot for an undrafted player to make noise either. The Seahawks welcomed back Noah Fant and A.J. Barner along with signing free agent Eric Saubert and investing a second round pick in Elijah Arroyo, stacking the deck heavily against anyone else vying for a roster spot. Barring injuries ahead of him, it seems improbable he will have any shot at a roster spot and if he wants to make it onto a practice squad in Seattle, he will have to outplay the likes of Saubert, Kallerup, and potentially Brady Russell, who will be battling for the fullback job but has prior tight end experience in the league. He faces an uphill battle and proving himself on special teams will be a necessary ingredient to surpass the rest of the field for a practice squad signing.
