Hours after losing standout running back Ken Walker III to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Seattle Seahawks made sure to prevent Sam Darnold from losing another one of his top skill position weapons in free agency.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Seahawks opened up the checkbook for the dynamic playmaking receiver and return specialist, retaining Shaheed on a three-year, $51 million contract worth $17 million per season. Under terms of the agreement, he will receive $34.7 million in guarantees over the life of the deal.

Acquired at the trade deadline by general manager John Schneider from New Orleans in exchange for a fourth and fifth-round draft pick, Shaheed becomes the latest in a long line of midseason pickups who stuck around beyond being a half season rental in Seattle. Previously, the franchise worked out long-term deals for linebacker Ernest Jones and defensive tackle Leonard Williams when both players were slated to become free agents after being acquired in deadline trades.

Though Shaheed didn’t have as much success on offense in 12 regular season and playoff games as the Seahawks envisioned with only 266 receiving yards and no touchdowns, he proved to be an absolute game changer with his electric home run-hitting talent on special teams. He returned a kickoff and punt for touchdowns in a three-game span from Week 14 to Week 16, fueling victories over the Falcons and Rams with his explosive theatrics as the team snagged an NFC West crown and the No. 1 seed in the postseason.

Continuing to emulate dynamite in the return game, Shaheed returned the opening kickoff of a Divisional Round contest against San Francisco 101 yards for a touchdown, jumpstarting an eventual 41-6 blowout victory. One week later, he finally came through as a downfield weapon for Darnold, snatching a 51-yard catch on a deep ball to set up a Walker touchdown run in the first quarter to put Seattle up early.

Paying Shaheed at a $17 million per year rate that sits him just outside the top-25 highest paid receivers in the sport, the Seahawks clearly believe a full offseason with Darnold will work wonders for the two players in regard to building chemistry after they endured some bumps in the road adapting to one another at midseason. The two only connected on 57.7% of their targets in nine regular season games and that number plummeted to 30% in the playoffs, but on numerous occasions, they missed linking up for explosive plays by a matter of inches.

Helping matters, even with former offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak departing to become the Raiders new head coach, incoming play caller Brian Fleury learned under the tutelage of 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan and will run a very similar offensive scheme to his predecessor. Shaheed should not only be a bigger focal point in the aerial attack in Fleury’s system, but he will also continue to be utilized in the run game on jet sweeps and end arounds while also being called upon on quick screens to get the football into his hands quickly.

One of the most dynamic special teams weapons in the NFL, Shaheed should continue to be Seattle’s primary kick and punt returner as well, though the return of a healthy Tory Horton may lead to a diminished role to an extent with the franchise looking to keep him healthy and fresh to do extensive damage on offense opposite of All-Pro Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp. Time will tell whether or not a time share will develop in that role or if the veteran will continue to receive most of the opportunities to return.

Looking beyond 2026, with Smith-Njigba expected to reset the market with a record-setting extension after earning Offensive Player of the Year honors last season and Kupp having only one year left on his contract, the Seahawks likely will move forward with Smith-Njigba, Shaheed, and Horton as their big three catching passes from Darnold, giving the team an exciting young nucleus with three dynamic players 27 years old or younger on the outside.
