With their offseason program all wrapped up, the Seattle Seahawks will open training camp at the VMAC on July 23, meaning the start of the upcoming season will be here before fans have a chance to blink.
In preparation for year number two under coach Mike Macdonald, I’ll be detailing every member of the Seahawks 90-man roster over the next several weeks, dishing out fun facts, exploring best and worst case scenarios, and predicting what to expect from each player entering the 2025 campaign.
Jumping into the fray in the middle of Seattle’s revamped offensive line as an undrafted rookie, will Federico Maranges be able to make a name for himself and create a three-way competition at center?
Federico Maranges
Height/Weight: 6-3, 302 pounds
2024 Stats: Eight pressures, one sack allowed
Growing up in Puerto Rico, Maranges and his family moved to Miami in 2017, where he played two seasons at Columbus High School in Miami before committing to Florida Atlantic. He saw a handful of snaps as a freshman in Coral Gables, ultimately taking a redshirt before jumping into the starting lineup at right guard during the 2020 season. Injuries limited him to just 101 total offensive snaps over the next two seasons, leading to the Owls transiting him full-time from guard to the center position before the start of the 2023 season.
Finally able to get healthy, Maranges excelled at the pivot position for Florida Atlantic, allowing fewer than 10 pressures and two sacks on more than 800 pass protection snaps during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. As a redshirt senior last year, he ranked just outside of the top 15 among qualified centers in zone blocking grade (74.1) according to Pro Football Focus. He also was selected by peers as a captain in both of those seasons and garnered Academic All-District honors. Going undrafted, he signed with the Seahawks as a priority free agent, providing an opportunity for him to compete against Olu Oluwatimi and Jalen Sundell at the center position.
Fun Fact: Demonstrating his effectiveness as a pass protector during his senior season, Maranges ranked 14th out of 123 qualified FBS centers with a 99 percent pass block efficiency rate on true pass sets, per PFF charting.
Best Case Scenario: Bringing ample experience with him to the NFL, Maranges gives Sundell a run for his money battling for the backup job with a stellar preseason and training camp, landing on the practice squad as a promising insurance option at the pivot position.
Worst Case Scenario: Struggling with NFL power in the trenches and overmatched technique-wise, Maranges doesn’t last through training camp before the Seahawks waive him and bring another center on board for an audition as a potential practice squad signing.
What to Expect in 2025: Compared to some of the undrafted rookies who signed with Seattle this year, Maranges has a much more decorated resume with over 1,100 college snaps to his name at Florida Atlantic. Taking advantage of those opportunities when he overcame a rash of injuries in the middle of his time with the Owls, he posted an excellent 98.4 percent pass block efficiency rate over the course of his college career and his success as a zone blocker in the run game makes him an ideal fit to plug into Klint Kubiak’s offense.
However, Maranges had issues adapting to some of the drills and techniques Seahawks line coach John Benton was teaching during OTAs and minicamp and heading towards training camp, he appears to have a huge gap to overcome to make a run at a roster spot behind Oluwatimi and Sundell, who each rotated with the first-team offense this spring. His previous experience at guard also won’t be kept in consideration after the team invested draft picks in Grey Zabel and Bryce Cabeldue to add to an already crowded group. While it’s not out of the realm of possibility he could play his way onto the practice squad, that would seem to be his ceiling right now with hopes of further development.
