With their offseason program all wrapped up, the Seattle Seahawks will open training camp at the VMAC on July 23, meaning the start of the upcoming season will be here before fans have a chance to blink.

In preparation for year number two under coach Mike Macdonald, I’ll be detailing every member of the Seahawks 90-man roster over the next several weeks, dishing out fun facts, exploring best and worst case scenarios, and predicting what to expect from each player entering the 2025 campaign.

Injuries derailed what could have been a special 2024 season for Connor O’Toole with the Utes. Can he justify the lofty undrafted free agent deal Seattle dished out to get him this summer?

### Connor O’Toole

**Height/Weight**: 6-3, 248 pounds

**2024 Stats**: 22 tackles, 2.5 sacks, five tackles for loss

O’Toole was a notable track athlete coming out of New Mexico and came to the University of Utah as a receiver prospect weighing under 215 pounds. He had a hard time cracking the lineup on offense and posted just one reception for five yards, however, so he switched to outside linebacker/EDGE rusher midway through his college career. Adding weight to his frame, he collected 41 tackles in 2022, his first year as a defensive player in Salt Lake City, showing promise as a pass rusher on defense.

Unfortunately, O’Toole’s final two seasons at Utah were marred by injuries. He played in 16 games combined in the final two years. However, there was enough production there when healthy to garner some interest from NFL teams with seven sacks in that span and he put on a display during the Big 12’s combined Pro Day in Dallas. With a high Relative Athletic Score (RAS), the Seahawks were intrigued enough to give him a sizable deal for an undrafted rookie with extensive guaranteed money, giving him a chance to compete for a reserve defensive role and spot on special teams.

**Fun Fact**: O’Toole was recruited by many schools as a tight end as well as a receiver, given his large frame. It wasn’t until midway through college that he specialized on defense and continued to play special teams.

**Best Case Scenario**: There are always a couple of spots open on the bottom of the 53-man roster for players who can show up on special teams. At Utah, O’Toole logged over 400 snaps in various roles on special teams. The best case scenario is for him to impress enough in preseason games to merit Seattle rewarding him with one of those final roster spots to be a special teams ace. He likely is not a viable candidate for the EDGE rusher depth chart at this time.

**Worst Case Scenario**: O’Toole is just overmatched by the NFL size and speed and is quickly cut and disappears from the minds of Seahawks fans quickly. Thus illustrating the cruel world of the NFL, especially regarding undrafted prospects who are just fighting to not get cut.

**What to Expect in 2025**: As long as he can stay healthy, O’Toole will likely get a nice runway to show what he can do during the preseason on special teams after receiving the most guaranteed money among Seattle’s undrafted signees this spring. Early in his Utah career, he was a mainstay on their kickoff coverage unit. Given the new kickoff rules that call for a more measured, strategic approach to kickoff coverage, his skills as a defender at Utah coupled with the athleticism that got him high-profile offers out of high school as a receiver will come in handy.

Whether that’s enough for O’Toole to finish inside the top 53 for the Seahawks is up for debate. Even with his obvious athletic tools, it’s a steep uphill climb for the former Ute, starting with standing out on special teams with several other athletic edge defenders attempting to shine in the same capacity. With the likes of Uchenna Nwosu, Boye Mafe, Derick Hall, and Demarcus Lawrence at the EDGE positions, it’s special teams or bust for O’Toole as he tries to stick around for a chance at further development at a position he’s still relatively new to.
