With their offseason program all wrapped up, the Seattle Seahawks will open training camp at the VMAC on July 23, meaning the start of the upcoming season will be here before fans have a chance to blink.

In preparation for year number two under coach Mike Macdonald, I’ll be detailing every member of the Seahawks 90-man roster over the next several weeks, dishing out fun facts, exploring best and worst case scenarios, and predicting what to expect from each player entering the 2025 campaign.

Establishing himself as a key cog in Seattle’s special teams arsenal, will Brady Russell be able to make the most a positional change to stay on the roster and make an impact in a new offense?

### Brady Russell

**Height/Weight**: 6-3, 250 pounds

**2024 Stats**: Nine tackles

A two-star recruit coming out of Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins, Colorado, Russell thrived on both sides of the football. While he also was a track star as a freshman in high school, he was arguably a better defensive end than he was a tight end. He had 46 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and fumble recovery in his senior year, leading to him signing a letter of intent to play at Colorado. He joined the Buffaloes in 2017 and redshirted before playing in 42 games and tallying 32 starts in Boulder. A constant for the Buffaloes on offense during some unfortunately lean seasons for the program, Russell was named to the John Mackey Award preseason watch list and the East-West Shrine Game watch list.

During his career at Colorado, Russell had 67 receptions for 709 yards and three touchdowns, but he went undrafted and signed with the Eagles before being claimed off waivers by the Seahawks in September 2023\. Playing in 15 games after being claimed, he contributed seven tackles on kick and punt coverage teams as a rookie, emerging as a fun surprise for the team. A foot issue cost him six games in 2024, but he still had nine tackles, ranking among Seattle’s leaders even with diminished action due to injury, and he will now slide to fullback to compete for offensive snaps against incoming rookie Robbie Ouzts.

**Fun Fact**: Continuing to excel as a tackler on special teams, Russell ranked just outside of the top 10 in total stops (nine) on kick and punt coverage last season despite only playing in 11 games, per Pro Football Focus.

**Best Case Scenario**: Already having a handful of fullback snaps under his belt from last season, Russell’s athleticism and toughness end up leading him to a somewhat unexpected win over Ouzts to take over a key role in Klint Kubiak’s offense, and he sees a career-high in snaps on that side of the ball while also leading the team in special teams tackles and snaps.

**Worst Case Scenario**: Outweighed by 20-plus pounds compared to Ouzts, Russell lacks the size to play the role of a lead-blocking enforcer in Kubiak’s offense and while his contributions on special teams nearly land him a spot on the 53, he winds up being waived and latching back on with the practice squad while returning to tight end.

**What to Expect in 2025**: The aforementioned foot injury put a damper on what otherwise was a strong second season for Russell, who commands respect in the locker room and has both Macdonald and general manager John Schneider in his corner as ardent supporters. He has been able to stick around in the league so far due to his unselfish mentality and willingness to do whatever the Seahawks ask him to do, including playing 18 snaps out of the backfield last season in short yardage and goal line situations. Even with that being a quite limited sample size, he should be better prepared for moving to the position full time once camp rolls around, and as Schneider cautioned in April after the draft, it wouldn’t be wise to count him out battling against Ouzts.

Since Russell has played quite a bit as an inline tight end in college and the league, he understands how to play above his weight class, and his athletic fluidity adds a wrinkle as a pass catcher that his new rookie counterpart likely won’t be able to match. But as evidenced by the decision to pick Ouzts in the fifth round, the Seahawks clearly desire a fullback similar to long-time Ravens starter Patrick Ricard who is built more like an extra offensive lineman than a running back. That may factor into the final decision on who wins the job, and if Russell isn’t able to find a way to beat out the rookie utilizing his strengths, even given his immense value as a special teams player, it may be trickier to justify a roster spot for him outright and open the door for playing elsewhere or joining Seattle’s practice squad instead.
