Just three days before the start of the 2026 NWSL season, the Seattle Reign announced they transferred starting striker Jordyn Huitema to the Chicago Stars for a fee of $500,000 on Thursday. The deal brings in $200,000 in allocation money and $300,000 in intra-league transfer money. The move signals the largest outgoing transfer fee in club history.

The allocation money can be used in trades or to eat up cap hits in other deals, while the intra-league funds can be put toward transfer funds. Seattle will likely hold off until the summer window before making a move.

Huitema, 24, spent four years in Seattle, with her 70 games played with the Reign ranking 11th in club history, while her 13 goals rank eighth. The Canadian forward from British Columbia is currently a starter with her national team and started in 18 of her 22 games with the Reign last season for three goals and two assists.

Her most lasting achievement with the squad is winning the 2022 NWSL Shield in her first season, starting in nine of the 10 games she appeared in for two goals. She was also a key part of a squad that reached the 2023 NWSL Final.

“Jordyn has been a tremendous professional and teammate during her time with the Reign,” Reign GM Lesle Gallimore said in a team statement. “We’re grateful for the commitment and energy she brought to the club and to our community. We wish her nothing but the best in the next chapter of her career.”

The move comes as the Reign's offense is under a microscope — having generated the fewest xG in 2025 en route to a fifth-place finish. Perhaps looking for a different spark at the striker spot, Seattle will turn to Chelsea transfer Mia Fishel and will likely move forward Coco Mondesir, who just inked an extension.

Fishel reportedly signed a $2.5 million deal with Seattle through 2029 after transferring, as the possibility of moving on from Huitema always loomed.

Head coach Laura Harvey has spoken at length about taking the training wheels off of Fishel, 24, who was recovering from years of injuries when the team acquired her last summer. With Huitema out of the picture, the pressure is as high as ever for Fishel to reignite this offense.

Still, there are things about Huitema's game the Reign may miss at times this season. Namely, her height, as her near-6-foot frame and acrobatic ability made for a strong header threat in the box at any time for Seattle. Fishel, 5-foot-5, is more of a technician and should provide solid hold-up play in addition to her dribbling mastery.

Alongside other talented on-ball players like Maddie Dahlien, Emeri Adames and Jess Fishlock, the Reign have the pieces necessary to construct a solid traditional offense.

Now they have more funds to add on for a playoff push this summer.
