SEATTLE, Wash. - Posting their best offensive performance through WCC play on Wednesday night, the Seattle Redhawks found their stroke at the perfect time in an 83-81 win over Pepperdine (6-18 overall, 1-10 WCC) that almost came out from underneath them in the final minutes.

Trailing by one with 42 seconds remaining, Seattle sent Pepperdine’s Styles Phipps to the free throw line, where he came up empty handed. On the other end, Brayden Maldonado hoisted a three that came off the glass and into the opportunistic hands of Junseok Yeo for a second chance layup to put the Redhawks ahead.

Phipps pushed the pace with 10 seconds remaining, driving into the paint and splitting a double-team on the left low block for a scooping layup before Will Heimbrodt rejected it into the hands of Maldonado. Immediately fouled, the guard made both clutch free throws and left Pepperdine with a missed last second shot to secure a tight win for the Redhawks.

Coming into Wednesday, the Redhawks were 12-2 when they have three or more players in double figures, a magic recipe that delivered a 13th victory on their home court. Four Redhawks finished in double figures with Yeo leading the way with 18 points on seven for 12 shooting. Yeo usually relies on his three-point shot, but he only made one on Wednesday. Instead, he found success driving and finishing off two feet, along with being a cutter.

Heimbrodt finished with 13 points, five rebounds, and three blocks in a balanced effort. One week earlier, after a loss to Washington State, head coach Chris Victor was critical of his sophomore forward, saying he needs to do a better job of playing off both feet. Heimbrodt took the criticism to heart and did a better job playing patient and found higher quality looks arond the basket, finishing four for nine from the field and earning nine trips to the free throw line.

Maldonado finished with 13 points and while it came on 3-12 shooting, he still drove aggressively, earning trips to the line and creating looks for his teammates. Houran Dan provided 13 points off the bench and was pivotal in Seattle dominating inside. The Redhawks outscored the Waves 46-26 in the paint and punished a Pepperdine team that ranks last in the WCC in 82 points allowed per game.

“Offense was better, I thought we played with better pace, did a really good job of attacking the rim,” Victor said postgame. “Hopefully we can match that offense with our usual defense coming up here.”

83 points is a welcomed sight for Victor, but a Seattle team that has relied on its defense looked compromised from the opening tip. 81 points for the Waves came with only four points from their bench as their starting lineup did the heavy lifting.

“It’s been a while since our defense has struggled like that,” Victor said. “We were a step behind all night and Pepperdine did a really good job of spacing us out, a lot of different actions off the basketball and I felt like we were chasing the game on defense the whole time, a lot of breakdowns, second half we were fouling a lot.”

While the Redhawks defense is used to cashing in on causing opponent mistakes, instead Pepperdine cashed in on 17 of 20 free throw attempts in the second half after only attempting six in the first 20 minutes. The turnovers simply weren’t there for Victor’s squad, allowing the visitors to nearly pull off a major upset.

Regardless, the Redhawks hunkered down when they needed to and forced tough shots on all of Pepperdine’s go ahead shot opportunities, escaping with a badly needed win in a tight WCC race and giving Victor something to be optimistic about afterward.

“I thought we had a lot of terrible dumb fouls in the second half, and we just needed to be solid and force them to make some shots, and I thought we did that those last couple of possessions.”
