SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Coming out of halftime at the UTSA Convocation Center, it seemed like the Seattle Redhawks were ready to blow their latest game against the UTSA Roadrunners wide open after extending their lead to 13 late in the first half.

However, as the Roadrunners did all game, they hung around and eventually whittled the score down to a one possession contest in the closing minute, only for Redhawks to survive with a collective sigh of relief when a go ahead three point attempt from UTSA’s Brent Moss misfired to secure a 71-68 road win.

“I’m proud of this team for finding a way to win,” Seattle coach Chris Victor said post-game. “It wasn’t the prettiest game, but we had some tough guys step up and make big plays down the stretch.”

Despite both teams struggling shooting the ball in the first half, the Redhawks managed to race out to a double-digit lead at the 3:50 mark, regularly finding their way to the basket for close looks. Both teams shot below 30% from the field in the first 20 minutes and for the Roadrunners to mount a comeback, their leading scorer needed to come alive. Jamir Simpson came into Monday averaging 18 points, but was held to just four in the first half.

As the Redhawks offense hit a skid of their own, Simpson came alive and began to eat into the Seattle lead, putting up 16 points in the final 20 minutes to spearhead the comeback. Along with his second half explosion, Rich Macaleab scored 14 points to turn a once-comfortable Seattle lead into a four-point advantage with just 2:30 left to play.

While it was a balanced scoring attack for the Redhawks, with four of the five starters in double figures, they could not put the Roadrunners away easily with their top two scorers combining for 45 points, doing most of that damage in the second half.

In a game where UTSA shot better from the field and three point range, the difference came in Seattle’s ability to get to the free throw line, where they made 19 shots at the charity stripe compared to just nine for the opposition. Will Heimbrodt had a relatively quiet day with 10 points on 4-13 shooting, but guard Brayden Maldonado, who finished with a team-high 15 points, pushed the pace and got to the basket all afternoon. Austin Maurer also consistently got into the lane on the attack, making 7-8 free throws and finishing with 11 points.

This pressure allowed the Redhawks to take 26 trips to the line as a team, 14 more than the Roadrunners, and that differential proved to be the difference with the home team ultimately making more shots and more three pointers from the field. Though it wasn’t the prettiest game Victor’s team has played amid a hot start, a win is a win and he still saw improvement in key areas to extend their winning streak on the road.

“Our success in going 11-2 in non-conference play is because we’ve continued to improve every day, and that has to remain our focus as we head into WCC play,” Victor said.

Maintaining the program’s best start since the 1962-63 season, when the Redhawks won two NCAA tournament games, Seattle improved to 11-2 and will ride a six-game winning streak heading into WCC play with their first conference contest coming against 8-5 San Francisco on Sunday at the Connolly Center.
