SEATTLE, Wash. - Following a three-game skid where their offense consistently came up short in crunch time, the Seattle Redhawks bounced back nicely in a 75-64 win over the San Diego Toreros on Thursday night at the Redhawk Center.

Near the midway point of the first half, the Redhawks looked like they were going to cruise to their second win of WCC play. They led by 15 points at that time, headlined by strong starts from Brayden Maldonado and John Christofilis, who each had multiple three pointers made, and Seattle made everything difficult for the San Diego offense on the defensive end.

Toreros star Ty-Laur Johnson, a junior guard who came into Thursday night averaging 19.4 points in WCC play, struggled early in his matchup with Seattle's Maleek Arington. However, even though Johnson’s shots were not falling as the Redhawks built a double-digit lead, the crafty guard drew two fouls on Arington, forcing the Redhawks to bench one of their top defenders early.

Freeing up their leading scorer, the Toreros began eating into the Seattle lead behind Johnson’s shot-making savvy. At the break, the lead whittled down to nine and within the first few minutes following halftime, the advantage had dwindled to just three.

Along with their offense finding its footing, the Toreros’ defense made much needed adjustments to slow down the Redhawks. San Diego disrupted Seattle's rhythm on offense with a full court press along with a 2-3 zone, and that adjustment made things difficult on coach Chris Victor’s squad.

“The way we started was great,” Victor said post-game. “I loved their energy and physicality and then the press bothered us and we started getting very tentative. We started playing on our heels and the whole energy of the game changed.”

Despite San Diego shooting its way right back in the game, the Redhawks only relinquished their lead once and didn’t let their foot off the gas like their previous three losses. As the game neared crunch time, Seattle took its time and attacked the zone. Aggressively driving to the rim led to good looks in the paint and also stretched out the floor, and Seattle's offense looked like it did in the first 12 minutes with shots starting to fall, helping finish off a badly needed win.

Junseok Yeo finished the game with a team-high 18 points and while the senior is usually known for his outside shooting, he had a couple key moments finishing inside and drawing fouls to get to the line in the second half. Maldonado finished with 16 points and four assists, and Christofilis added 11 points off the bench.

“I thought we rebounded well to start, but then we lost that. I thought we had a couple physical drives that were important in the second half, so I think you saw it here and there, but it was not as consistent as we want it to be,” Victor said.

While the Redhawks consistency varied as Victor mentioned postgame, they executed adjustments on offense as they had failed to do in their past three games to secure their 13th win of the season. After the victory, the challenge of Gonzaga looms ahead, as they will have a shot to avenge an earlier overtime loss to the Bulldogs on Saturday at 7 PM PT at Climate Pledge Arena.
