After winning a pair of preseason games this weekend, the Seattle Kraken cut 26 players from their training camp on Monday. The majority of those players, including Jani Nyman, Ty Nelson, Jagger Firkus, Tyson Jugnauth, and Eduard Sale, were assigned to the Coachella Valley Firebirds, while three others were reassigned to their junior team.

In the aftermath of those moves, Kraken training camp now sits at 25 players with two exhibition games left and the season set to begin on October 1.

Notably, this means centers Jake O’Brien and Oscar Fisker-Mølgaard and defenseman Ville Ottavainen have shown enough in preseason games and training camp to stick around for the next two games at minimum. O’Brien should earn another preseason game, but is a longshot considering the solidified center group the Kraken possess. Fisker-Mølgaard has the versatility to play wing or center on the fourth line, but is battling Ryan Winterton, Jacob Melanson, Curtis Douglas, Ben Myers, and Frederick Gaudreau. It’ll be tough for the youngster to beat out two of those players.

Goalies Niklas Kokko and Dolan Gilbert remain in Seattle as well, but are there more so for practice and preseason relief than their NHL roster likelihood.

Nyman has played 40 NHL games across the last two NHL seasons and was battling for a spot on the Kraken bottom line. He will probably earn another call up to the NHL and can continue developing his game in a big role with the Firebirds. The same goes for Firkus, Sale, and the other top forward prospects in the organization.

Nelson was the most pleasant surprise in preseason action so far. He tallied a goal in both games, was strong on both ends of the ice, and earned praise from Lane Lambert. The 22-year-old could earn his first NHL look later this season, but it’s a deep defense group that still has to cut one or two more from the blue line before the opener.

Other defensemen like the offensively gifted Tyson Jugnauth and Lukas Dragicevic will also need more AHL time before cracking into the NHL lineup. Only three of the eight blueliners on the current roster are signed past this season, so there is certainly opportunity coming up.

J.R. Avon, John Hayden, Logan Morrison, and Victor Ostman have to clear waivers before they can be assigned to Coachella Valley. Morrison, 24, could get claimed coming off a near-point per-game season in the AHL.
