The Seattle Kraken are clinging to a playoff spot. At 29-23-9 (67 points), Seattle owns the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. The San Jose Sharks sit at 64 points as their closest competitor behind them in the Wild Card.

The Pacific Division is also not a foregone conclusion. Seattle is just one point behind the third place Edmonton Oilers for that final playoff spot among division leaders.

[MoneyPuck.com](http://moneypuck.com/?ref=emeraldcityspectrum.com)’s playoff odds currently have the Kraken at 62.7%.

Needless to say, the Kraken are smack in contention. There is no reason to think this team can’t compete for a playoff spot down the stretch. Especially, if they add a piece or two.

President of hockey operations Ron Francis told fans after last year’s deadline, when they sold off impact players for draft picks, “we’ve got 10 picks. We’re not sitting here hoping to draft 10 players, we’re hoping to use those picks as capital to try and acquire players and speed things up.” They also have just over $21 million in cap space.

It’s time for the organization to put their money where their mouth is. This trade deadline, which ends Friday, March 6 at 12:00pm PT, is massively important for the Kraken. They have two first round picks in this summer’s draft and four of the top 98 picks. It’s time to pull the trigger to upgrade this team. Despite the Kraken being in a playoff spot, they have a negative goal differential. They rank 25th in goals scored per game. Seattle’s top goal scorer is Jordan Eberle at 22, which ranks 54th in the NHL.

They severely lack an impact goal-scorer on the ice. Too often, they seem to lack that offensive juice that good teams usually have. They desperately need a center or winger that can simply put the puck in the net more than they have right now.

This deadline is a massive inflection point for this organization. Failing to add an impact offensive piece ahead of Friday’s deadline would be a failure. The Kraken need to strike while the iron is hot. The Western Conference is wide open. They have a better-than-50-percent chance at a playoff berth. And they have the cap space and draft picks to go get it done.

This organization has only made the playoffs once in the four seasons of its existence. Now they have a shot to make the playoffs again, after promising the fans to “speed things up” after being a seller last year.

This is how you “speed things up.” You add before tomorrow’s deadline. To solidify their playoff spot and avoid slipping out, the Kraken need to focus on moderate buying rather than selling or standing pat.

David Pagnotta told the Seattle Kraken Audio Network “I would put the Kraken in the category of ‘big fish hunting.’”

The next question is who?

Look no further than the player who notched two points, a goal and an assist, against the Kraken on Wednesday night, Robert Thomas of the Blues.

Thomas is an elite playmaker with team control (through 2030-31 at a $8.125M cap hit) and could center a top line and elevate other players like Jared McCann and Matty Beniers. He would add instant legitimacy to this front line in Seattle.

His teammate, Jordan Kyrou, is also enticing. He’s a speedy winger with scoring upside, with three straight seasons of 30-plus goals.

A non-Blues option could be Calgary’s Nazem Kadri. He’s a veteran scorer with Cup experience.

Another question is - will the Kraken package Shane Wright to acquire the upgrade? The former first rounder has had a frustratingly uneven Kraken career, yet still is tantalizingly talented.

All eyes are on general manager Jason Botterill. This is perhaps the most important trade deadline in franchise history. Given what they accrued by selling off last year, it’s time to cash that in and make a run this spring.
