Report: Seahawks to Sign Former All-Pro CB Trevon Diggs

It appears the Seattle Seahawks are not yet satisfied with their depth at the cornerback position. Even with the news of them intending to sign Terrion Arnold, a former first round pick recently cut by the Lions due to ongoing legal issues, Seattle decided to pull the trigger adding another noteworthy veteran name to their secondary.

As reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, after working out for the team on Tuesday, the Seahawks have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former Cowboys All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs. The team has yet to officially announce the deal, but is expected to do so before making the trip to Nashville for joint practices with the Titans.

Facing eight felony charges for an incident stemming from February in Tampa, Florida, the Arnold situation is still unresolved, with reports indicating that he will be heading to the Commissioner’s Exempt List whenever he signs. Even if he is eventually cleared for the Seahawks, it’s highly likely he won’t suit up anytime soon, as his next court date isn’t until October 5. This makes it far less pressing to sign him, and the team may wait until after the cut down date later this month to do so.

Now, Seattle adds another talented corner in Diggs. In 2021, he led the NFL with a whopping 11 interceptions, two of which were returned for touchdowns. That earned him First Team All-Pro honors. Since that time, it has been an up-and-down ride for the Alabama product. His game has a “boom-or-bust” nature that Mike Macdonald likely wants to coach out of him, though defensive pass game coordinator Karl Scott coached him with the Crimson Tide and may be more comfortable with his aggressive playing style.

The former second round pick spent five and a half seasons with the Cowboys before they waived him towards the end of last season in a bizarre ending for the two parties after he suffered a torn ACL the previous season. The Green Bay Packers picked him up and he appeared in one game for them. He adds to the competition for the cornerback spots behind the freshly paid duo of Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe.

While this signing doesn’t mean Arnold isn’t coming to Seattle after all, it does speak to how soon (or not) the Seahawks feel Arnold will be able to suit up. Diggs was a feature piece of the secondary in Dallas for his first several years in the league. Some of his imperfections gave Dallas cause for pause, especially coming off injury with his massive cap hits in future seasons.

Seattle has brought in Arnold, Noah Igbinoghene, and now Diggs, along with drafting corners Julian Neal, Andre Fuller, and Michael Dansby. With Neal sidelined for most of camp, Nehemiah Pritchett has been the primary No. 3 corner with Igbinoghene pushing him for reps and both Fuller and Dansby having steady starts to their respective NFL careers, but clearly, the organization sees a need to bolster the group with another experienced talent.

With Diggs only needing to be Seattle’s third or even fourth-best corner, the pressure is off with hopes he can rediscover some of his former All-Pro juice. Plus, there is no coaching staff in the NFL that can get the best out of Diggs like Macdonald and Scott can.
