The Seattle Reign took a bold step toward the future in 2025\. With a roster powered by young talent like Emeri Adames, Maddie Dahlien, Sam Meza, Jordyn Bugg and others, the Reign jumped from a 13th-place finish to a playoff berth at No. 5 in 2025.

Organizing the collection of young talent was a familiar face. Laura Harvey has coached the blue and gold since their founding in 2012, recruiting the likes of eventual team legends like Lauren Barnes before the franchise kicked off its first match. Over the past 14 years, nine of which she’s spent in Seattle after a hiatus from from the club from 2017-2021, Harvey has carved a legacy that stands alongside any other legend of the women's game.

For one, Harvey is the NWSL's all-time regular-season win leader at 113 victories, netting Seattle three NWSL Shields (most recently in 2022) while earning Coach of the Year honors three times (most recently in 2021).

While Harvey is yet to top the NWSL postseason with a title win, the Reign ensured their skipper will get plenty of chances to pursue that ultimate goal — extending Harvey through the 2028 season on Tuesday.

"There was zero hesitation, honestly," Harvey said of her signing at a presser on Thursday. "This club is so special to me; I care about it deeply. And I think the vision that we have across the board at leadership level on who we want to be now, what we want to look like in the future, is exciting to me."

The English coach, formerly of Liverpool FC, has taken on the task of ushering Seattle through a transitional period the likes of which the franchise hasn't seen. With the legendary Megan Rapinoe retiring in 2023, the Reign went from finishing as league runners-up to being completely out of the playoff picture in 2024\. Harvey leaned into the rebuild in 2025, putting her team's hopes into teenagers like her eventual leading scorer in Adames and a USWNT talent in Bugg. With the strategic deployment of veteran scorer Jess Fishlock and a bend-don't-break defense, the Reign fought their way to a first-round exit against Orlando.

Despite the valleys of the season, such as a 4-2 loss to Portland and the final 2-0 loss to the Pride, Harvey embraced every moment of the unique experience.

"Last year was one of the funnest years I've had of coaching this team. It felt like a new era, it felt like there was something special," Harvey said. "We were closing the chapter on one person who's been really influential in our club in (Barnes), but we were seeing this new generation come through, and that was really exciting … selfishly, I didn't want anyone else to enjoy that."

For the leadership group, including general manager Lesle Gallimore, it was important to square Harvey away before the team got back to training.

"We wanted to eliminate any distractions as quickly as we could, so this conversation was going on well before the announcement," Gallimore said. "I think that hopefully helped Laura focus on what we want her to focus on every day, which is our team."

While 2025 was an unexpectedly large step in the right direction, Harvey still has her work cut out for her. Seattle’s opportunity generation was among the worst in the NWSL in 2025 while the defense leaned on star keeper Claudia Dickey too heavily at times, finishing among the worst teams in expected goals allowed last season. Despite that one chief concern in generating more chances, she believes the squad’s defense will continue to take it where it needs to go, having finished fourth-best in goals allowed in 2025.

"The top teams in the league found it really hard to play against us and beat us, and the reason for that was because of our defensive acumen,” Harvey said.

The Reign will start training next Tuesday, with on-field activities scheduled to begin next Thursday. They’ll be short a few big names when they step back on the pitch, however.

### Five Reign Players to Join USWNT for Friendlies

There are few signs of a team's talent more potent than how many players the club sends to the international stage. Seattle put a feather - or rather, five - in their cap last week.

Five Seattle players, including senior team staples like Bugg, Meza and Dickey (who led the NWSL with 88 saves in 2025) were selected to join the U.S. Women's National Team for two upcoming exhibition matches. Accompanying those three are two former U-23 call-ups in Dahlien and midfielder Sally Menti, as the consistent Reign contributors are making waves early in their careers.

The USWNT will be training in California before squaring off against Paraguay and Chile on Jan. 24 and Jan. 27, respectively.

### World Cup Moves Initial Three 2026 Home Matches East of the Cascades

The Seattle Reign will make Spokane's ONE Spokane Stadium their venue for the first three home dates of the 2026 season. With FIFA World Cup preparations, including the addition of grass to Lumen Field, complicating venue’s availability in the spring, the Reign will play their March 25, March 28 and April 4 games against Kansas City, Louisville and Denver, respectively, in Spokane.

When the Reign return to Lumen on April 26 against Utah, they will get to compete on a grass playing surface at home for the first time in club history.

In all, the Reign will play 30 matches as the league has expanded to 16 teams.

### Reserve Keeper Shuffle

The Reign announced Wednesday that second-year goal keeper Maddie Prohaska had been traded to Racing Louisville as the club pulled in $25,000 in allocation funds and another $25,000 in intra-league transfer funds for 2026.

Prohaska didn't appear in a game for Seattle in 2025 as Dickey was a model of consistency in the net, but Gallimore and co. moved quickly to replace the reserve with a U-18 signing in 17-year-old Evan O'Steen, who previously played with Dallas Trinity FC in the Gainsbridge Super League and trained with the Reign early in the 2025 season after winning a title with Florida State as a reserve.

O'Steen marks the second keeper signed by Seattle this offseason, joining Neeku Purcell. As training camp approaches, Seattle's keeper room comprises Dickey, Purcell, O'Steen and veteran Cassie Miller.
