Out of respect for St. Louis’ dynamic attack, Seattle Sounders coach Brian Schmetzer chose to go back to the 4-2-3-1 for Saturday’s tilt and it paid dividends as Seattle played arguably it’s best game of the season in a 4-1 rout at Lumen Field.

Schmetzer spoke after the game talking about his tactical change and the thinking behind going back to a familiar formation and why this was the time to do it:

Helping push Schmetzer to 10th all-time in MLS history for coaching wins, Ryan Kent shined in his cameo, Nouhou put in his best performance of the season, and Danny Musovski scored in his 4th straight game. Looking back at the victory, here are the full player ratings from any player who played more than 30 minutes in the lopsided three-goal win vs St. Louis City SC:

### Stefan Frei - 7

Unlike the last couple of matches for the Sounders captain, Frei didn’t have a ton to do in order to preserve a result. There wasn’t much he could do on the penalty, and he made three saves in total throughout the match but it didn’t seem like much else threatened his goal after the penalty went in for 1-0 St. Louis.

### Yeimar - 6

Yeimar has been under scrutiny in recent weeks because of his costly mistakes, and it came up once again on Saturday night. Still at 0-0, the match hung in the balance early on and he committed the foul that led to the penalty for the visitors that would eventually give them the lead. Yes it was a soft decision, but Yeimar once again put himself in a position where the referee didn’t have much choice but to give the foul. He is somewhat unlucky because it really is one or two moments recently that have been errors on the part of Yeimar and he still does so much that goes relatively unnoticed in shutting down the opposing attack, but as a defender, you are more harshly judged when one or two moments in the game goes the other way and leads to a goal, and that has been the case in recent weeks for the Sounders defender.

### Kim - 7

Kim has slotted in very well alongside Yeimar in the absence of Jackson Ragen. He won’t do a lot that will show up on the highlight reel post match, but sometimes that’s what you need your center back to be: someone that just does his job and doesn’t make mistakes. He did that once again on Saturday night and what may have seemed like an emergency, last-minute signing for some center back depth going into the season has proven to be one of the most important additions to the 2025 squad.

### Nouhou - 9

Saturday was Nouhou’s best performance of the season. It almost seemed like he was a kid in a candy store given more freedom to get forward and he took advantage of it, scoring a goal and getting an assist as well on the Danny Musovski goal. Nouhou has been one of the players that has excelled in the back three versus the back four, but he showed his ability to be versatile in any role given to him by Schmetzer.

### Alex Roldan - 8

It was a return to the starting 11 for the younger Roldan brother, and Alex proved why he is the starting right back for Seattle. He does such a good job in picking his moments on when to get forward without leaving the defense exposed to a counter. The Sounders attack also hits another level when he joins in on it, he probably puts in the best cross on the team, and he connects incredibly well with forwards and midfielders with the versatility to slot into midfield if he happens to find himself there at some point. It’s great to have him back in the team.

### Cristian Roldan - 7

Much like his brother, one of the greatest strengths in Cristian’s game is his versatility. It seems like the formation change was a natural one to him and even though he is sitting a little deeper now, he still is able to get involved in the attack when needed. He also can slot into one of the outside back spots if Alex or Nouhou find themselves caught forward in an attempt to overlap, so he provides a necessary safety valve for the defense on the counter attack. He also completed the most passes out of any player in the match with 68, so he is becoming more an more influential as the season goes on.

### Obed Vargas - 9

Another standout performer was Seattle’s 19-year old Mexican international phenom. His quality on the ball is unmatched on this entire team and very few in the league can match it. He finally got a reward for many great performances as he got a nice deflected goal that would stand as the game winner, but that isn’t the best part of his game. It’s his ability to keep possession in tight spaces and when opposing players collapse on him to rid him of possession, it opens up space for everyone else and he is incredibly quick at finding the right pass and there isn’t a pass he can’t hit. It has been said many times before, but the Sounders will be lucky if he lasts the whole season without being poached by a European club for big money.

### Albert Rusnak - 9

It wasn’t the penalty finish that gives Rusnak the high rating in the match, it’s the chances created. With a whopping six chances generated by Albert, that was the most in the match and the most in a singular match by a Sounders player this season. It seems getting back to his comfortable role as the true #10 was a welcomed experience for Rusnak. He embodies what a #10 should be in modern football with his quality, creativity, and IQ. He also slotted home the penalty that tied the game at one to get Seattle going in the first half.

### Pedro de la Vega - 7

He’s starting to get more and more comfortable as an important player in this Sounders attack. There is understandably some frustration with his lack of goal production being a designated player, but that will come with more time in the team and a clearer role for de la Vega. There is a little bit of redundancy with both him and Albert Rusnak in the side providing a similar skill set, but there is a way to make it work. There is no doubt about the Argentine’s quality and it’s no coincidence that this teams offensive turnaround has coincided with his return from injury.

### Paul Rothrock - 7

Rothrock put in another solid performance on Saturday night. He got the offense started when he earned the penalty just minutes after Seattle when down after conceding a penalty of their own. He is best when he gets time and space on the ball and he can isolate players 1-on-1 but also brings the ability to pick a pass when needed. With the emergence of Ryan Kent, there might be some looking over the shoulder for the homegrown player, but it isn’t because of performances, the Sounders just have good attacking options available at the moment.

### Danny Musovski - 8

Make that goals in the last four games for the Sounders striker. If Musoovski continues to score goals, he will continue to stay on the team sheet. He didn’t provide much else besides the finish but he keeps finding himself in the right place at the right time, which is definitely a skill as a striker, and he is showing the quality to bury the chances when they are given to him.

### Ryan Kent - 9

In a game with many different shouts for Man of the Match, it has to be given to Ryan Kent. The in-season signing has slowly ramped up his role each game and he got 33 minutes on Saturday night. Boy, did he ever make the most of that time. When he entered the game, it was a 1-1 contest that was still pretty tightly fought between the two sides, but that all changed when the Englishman entered the match. Providing two stellar assists, and showing a surprisingly tight connection with players like Obed Vargas and Pedro de la Vega, he showed why the Sounders went out and brought him into this team. His pace, his quality, his decision making are all stellar and many fans will be asking Schmetzer to hand him the start next week in Houston.
