The Seattle Sounders came into the match against the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night gaining just five points through their first five MLS matches and sitting in 12th place. It’s definitely too early in the season to declare the match against the Earthquakes a “must-win,” but if the Rave Green were to avoid yet another slow start to the season, this was one they had to have.

The Sounders’ struggles offensively without Jordan Morris and Pedro de la Vega seemed to continue as the likes of Jesus Ferreira, Cristian Roldan, and more couldn’t get the monkey off their back, but Albert Rusnak would come through in the 80th minute to salvage a point for Seattle on the road in a 1-1 draw against San Jose.

Below is a breakdown of all 11 starting Sounders players, plus substitutes, and each player getting a game rating from yours truly on a scale from 1-10.

### Srefan Frei - 7

There wasn’t much Stef could do on the goal, as it was a poor giveaway in the back, as well as a wicked deflection and he still almost kept it out. Other than that, he was clean with a few good saves, although there would be a few nervy moments with the ball at his feet, and a couple miss-hit clearances, a couple uncharacteristic moments from the Sounders No. 1\. He made a huge 1-on-1 save on Josef Martinez late in the match to keep it at 1-0, but was eventually ruled offside.

### Jackson Ragen - 7

The young Sounders defender is coming into his own this season. Amidst the offensive struggles, besides an unfortunate slip that lead to a goal vs St Louis City SC, Ragen has been doing his job. What has been especially impressive about his performances of late has been the new formation as playing in a back 3 is significantly different than the familiar back 4 that Seattle has played for years. His one flaw in this match was on the goal. He was smooth on the ball, solid defensively, though he did commit a necessary foul on a break as the Sounders were pushing for the winner that awarded him a yellow card.

### Yeimar - 6

This was another solid outing from one of the rocks in Seattle’s defense, as Yeimar made a few necessary tackles as he always does and was a good physical presence to counter San Jose’s Arango. He did make an ill-advised foul at the top of the box with Arango’s back to goal, and with San Jose’s quality free kick takers, that is a mistake that an experienced defender like him cannot afford to make.

### Nouhou - 7

Nouhou put in a good shift in his return from international duty. He did well defensively, but the highlight of the day for him was getting two quality looks on goal from distance forcing San Jose’s keeper Daniel into two good saves. He covered very well as Seattle was pushing for the equalizer and go-ahead goal, and his presence proves to be important to unlock Alex Roldan going forward.

### Alex Roldan - 6

Of all the back four, Alex Roldan was the one who got forward the most as a wing back. Early on in the match, he struggled to get involved as San Jose closed down the wings with effectiveness. But with the substitute of Georgi Minoungu, who demanded a lot of attention from the opposition, it opened things up for Alex and he smartly started to pinch in and help out in midfield, which got him more involved.

### Joao Paulo - 6

Paulo, perhaps unfairly, was substituted at half time for Danny Musovski as Seattle needed a spark to search for the equalizer. The Sounders midfielder was tidy in possession in the first half, but perhaps was a bit overrun by San Jose’s younger midfield. But that was hardly an issue with his performance tonight, and someone had to be sacrificed as the Sounders looked for the game tying goal.

### Obed Vargas - 7

The Sounders youngster did well tonight to keep things ticking in the first half, but Vargas was instrumental in the improved second half as he would play the role of orchestrator, creating chances regularly for Sounders forwards. Vargas also came up big multiple times as Seattle was pushing in covering defensively when San Jose would get on the break. He is a special player.

### Paul Rothrock - 5

Rothrock once again struggled to get involved. Far too many times it seemed like he was on the outside looking in when Seattle was probing for a goal. That can sometimes be the life of a winger; when the run of play just doesn’t seem to flow to your side of the field, it can be very difficult to affect the game. When he did get his touches he was effective, but that didn’t happen enough. He was substituted out for Georgi in the 73rd minute and that move changed the game.

### Cristian Roldan - 5

For the entire first half, similarly to Rothrock, Roldan struggled to find his way into the game. But when he moved into midfield when Musovski came in for Paulo, he looked much more comfortable. He had a couple nice little runs in behind as he usually does, combined well with Ferreira and his brother, and created a few chances. But the first half was one to forget for the Sounders veteran.

### Albert Rusnak - 8

Rusnak was the man of the match. His impressive goal tied the score and he had another opportunity to win it just a few minutes later, but couldn’t time his volley correctly. He also was instrumental in getting Seattle more on the ball after the stroke of half time and that resulted in the away side looking much more comfortable than in the first 45\. He has been the best player on the team in the early part of the season and has been a bright spot offensively, amidst a lot of question marks. There is one player who has been reliable every appearance and that is Albert Rusnak. He also looks to have added an eye for goal to his game and that could be a game-changer for the Rave Green in their goal scoring issues.

### Jesus Ferreira - 5

Entering the match, many questions were raised for Ferreira on if he was the one to fill the void for Jordan Morris during his injury. He did little to answer any of those questions in today’s match. There were multiple occasions on just mistimed runs or combinations with his midfielders and wingers. He did look much more comfortable after the addition of Danny Musovski, but that is because he was dropping much deeper almost like another midfielder as Musovski was the one playing high. He also missed a golden opportunity on a brilliant run by Georgi Minoungu, who set him up, but Ferreira was unable to get the crucial tough to redirect it which would have been the game-winning goal. He needs to do more in the box and start to get chemistry with his teammates around him.

### Danny Musovski - 4

It was a rough night for Musovksi. He did well on multiple occasions to hold the ball up and play in a runner in behind, but he was subbed in to score goals. That’s what a striker is meant to do and he was given two glorious opportunities to tie the game in situations you would expect an MLS striker to score. The first one was a fantastic through ball from Obed Vargas and instead of taking it with his stronger right foot, he tried cutting in on his weaker left foot, on the side of the defender and didn’t get enough power on it as San Jose’s keeper made the save. The second opportunity was even more egregious as Minoungu got by his defender and got to the end line and played a beautiful cut back for Musovski on the top of the six-yard box. But instead of using his left foot, he went for the outside of the right and got it all wrong. It was just a sign of a lack of confidence for the Sounders striker and a missed opportunity to show he belongs at this level.

### Georgi Minoungu - 7

While Rusnak’s goal was taken well, Minoungu also deserves a shout for player of the match. His substitution changed the game as once again he provided a direct approach that was missing from the side before his appearance. Every time he touched the ball, he was a threat and San Jose knew it too, as they committed two, sometimes three defenders to him, which opened things up for his teammates when he was still able to beat the press. His final product was excellent as well, putting multiple good crosses in. He was unlucky not to get an assist in what should have been the game winning goal after beautifully setting up Musovski and Ferreira on two different occasions. His game score would have been higher if he played longer.

Tonight turned out to be a big point rescued for the Sounders as they avoided disaster. Offensive issues still remain, as well as starting games on the front foot, but there was no quit in the Rave Green and they came out in the second half with a fire lit under them knowing there needed to be a sense of urgency. There were good performances from Rusnak, Nouhou, and Georgi, but concerns still linger with filling the void at the striker position as both Ferreira and Musovski failed to impress. Seattle still sits in 12th place in the Western Conference standings after the draw vs San Jose, so hopefully the second half of this one is something to build on.

Seattle’s next match will be in San Diego against the newest MLS side on Saturday.
