On July 21, 2021, veteran defenseman Adam Larsson was selected from the Edmonton Oilers at the 2021 NHL expansion draft, adding him to the expansion Seattle Kraken’s inaugural roster. He also became one of their first signings, inking a four-year, $16 million deal.

The 15-year vet now enters his fifth season as a member of the Kraken, still one of the holdovers remaining from the original team. There are a trio of blueliners who have stuck around since the inception of the franchise. Along with Larsson, Vince Dunn and Jamie Oleksiak also remain part of the team.

Larsson actually is the franchise leader in games played in a Kraken uniform, at 343\. He deserves kudos for his durability in such a brutal sport such as hockey. Miraculously, he has missed just one game in his entire Seattle career, playing 343 out of a possible 344 games. That is the third-most games played among any player in the NHL since the beginning of the 2021-2022 season.

With how many hits from opponents he takes and how many high-velocity shots he blocks with his body, he is a figure of durability. He is the franchise leader in blocks and hits as well.

For what it’s worth, he also is the Kraken franchise leader in plus/minus at the moment. Of course, that number fluctuates constantly.

The Swedish blueliner is off to a slow start to the year in regards to goals and assists, which just three assists without a goal. However, he is making an impact elsewhere. Larsson isn’t flashy, and that’s exactly why he’s so valuable. His pace of 2.5 blocked shots per game he is on right now would be the best of his career. He is coming off of back-to-back three-block games against Dallas and Columbus.

While he may not be the “captain” of the ship, he might be in charge of the keel. He regularly takes the toughest defensive assignments, logs heavy minutes, and brings a calm, veteran presence that stabilizes every pairing he plays on. Only Brandon Montour has played more minutes among Kraken skaters the last two seasons than Larsson.

Sure, he doesn’t light the lamp as often as a Cale Makar. But he has come through in several big spots, being credited with seven career “game winning goals” over his tenure in Seattle. That is the most among any Kraken defenseman. While other defenseman are flashier with sexier stats, Larsson is steady as ever. They say the best “ability” is “availability” and Larsson has been nothing if not available for the Kraken for five years.

Larsson deserves more recognition and praise for his steady, constant presence even as the Kraken franchise has evolved and morphed so many times already in their short history.
