No Sophomore Slump: Seahawks’ Nick Emmanwori Set to Make Superstar Leap
The Seattle Seahawks being allowed by the other 31 NFL teams to trade up in the second round to steal away Nick Emmanwori in the 2025 NFL Draft might be something every single one of those franchises regrets for years to come.
Emmanwori to Seattle reeks of teams pulling their hair out and saying, “We let that guy go there?!”
Yes, the Seahawks, with their defensive wizard of a head coach in Mike Macdonald, were able to hand-pick the queen of his proverbial chess board. His next Kyle Hamilton, his former star pupil in Baltimore.
Honestly, the Hamilton comparison might be underselling what Emmanwori could become. The Notre Dame-turned-Raven star has three Pro Bowls and two First Team All-Pro bids to his name. Does anybody reading this think Emmanwori can’t exceed that in Seattle?
As the 2025 regular season progressed, teams, experts, and football minds online all came to the realization that Emmanwori was the ultimate “skeleton key” for an NFL defense.
As an offense, if you want to go spread and try to play basketball on grass, Emmanwori will be in your best pass-catchers’ back pockets with his 4.38, 23.53 mph-speed. Think going heavy and running the ball at him will do the trick? Good luck. His 6-3, 220-pound frame and 75 5/8-inch wingspan will shut it down. Star tight ends? Covered. Shifty running backs? Tackled.
From the very first drive of Emmanwori’s career, it was clear he was exactly what Macdonald needed to unlock a new level of his ingenious scheme. He made a tackle for loss against former Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey on his fourth career snap.
Unfortunately, that play ended up injuring his ankle and Emmanwori missed the next three games. That might have been the only reason why Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger took home Defensive Rookie of the Year instead of Seattle’s Swiss army knife.
Still, that play was a microcosm of what Emmanwori is. He is the ultimate neutralizer. He can tackle Christian McCaffrey for a loss and hang with tight end George Kittle in coverage on the very next snap.
To put his outstanding rookie season in perspective, he had more passes deflected than Patriots’ star corner Christian Gonzalez and as many tackles for loss as teammate Leonard Williams.
A two-time Super Bowl champion and long time NFL veteran Chris Long gave some eyebrow-raising praise to the young defensive back on his Green Light podcast.
"He is the best player on that Seattle defense,” Long said. “He is one of the best athletes in the NFL... He looks like a defensive end…I think that was one of the things when you're watching this you say this guy's got Hall of Fame potential and it's like LOB all over again.”
That assessment comes from a longtime ex-NFL player and a former high draft pick in Long.
People want to compare Emmanwori to Hamilton. Well, Hamilton’s first Pro Bowl and All-Pro season came in his second year in the league, which also was his second year with Macdonald.
Already a Super Bowl champ, imagine the leap Emmanwori can make with this match made in heaven with his head coach and all of the talent Seattle has around him.
