We see it all the time in sports. The “look-ahead” spot or “trap game.” Teams fall into them all the time.

Even with the San Francisco 49ers looming in Week 18, Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers is *far too important* for the Seattle Seahawks to take lightly. That is not just because of what’s coming next. The Week 17 matchup has serious playoff implications for both clubs.

The Seahawks (12-3) are battling to secure the NFC West title and potentially the No. 1 seed in the NFC, and any slip against a motivated Panthers team could materially affect their path through January. It could be the difference between having a bye through the Wild Card round and home field advantage throughout the postseason, and playing a road game in the first round.

Carolina isn’t just a “tune-up” opponent. The Panthers (8-7) are fighting for their playoff lives and a chance at the NFC South crown after ending a long postseason drought. A victory over Seattle would dramatically boost their chances. Carolina’s win last week over the Buccaneers vaulted them into first place in the division and makes this game crucial for their championship hopes.

That urgency means Seattle is going to face a team that will not roll over, and underestimating that kind of opponent in a must-win situation could cost the Seahawks critical momentum. This Panthers team hasn’t made the playoffs since 2017\. They are hungry.

From Seattle’s perspective, losing to Carolina would dampen the significance of the Week 18 showdown with the 49ers. The Bears, Rams, and 49ers are all within striking distance of the No. 1 seed if the Seahawks slip up down the stretch. Losing to this Panthers team, with a 10 AM PT start after a cross country trip, would likely be fatal in Seattle’s division and top-seed hopes.

Bryce Young has played like one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL since late last season. Since Week 11 of last year, he is completing 63 percent of his passes, with 32 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions in 21 games, with a solid 90.5 passer rating. He also leads the NFL this season with six game-winning drives, consistently coming through in the clutch.

Ultimately, this Panthers game is no mere appetizer before the 49ers main course. This game in Charlotte will tell us a lot about Seattle’s mental toughness. Treating Week 17 with anything less than full intensity risks giving up not only a game but also control over their postseason destiny. The Seahawks need to respect the Panthers’ motivation and approach this game as a *must-win*, because in the NFL’s tight playoff race, every result matters. Neither side can afford to look past this game, as both the Panthers and Seahawks have a division-deciding game in Week 18 against a division rival.

Mike Macdonald typically has his teams motivated, regardless of opponent. However, if the Seahawks experience another slow start in the first half like like they have shown the last several weeks against the Falcons, Colts, and Rams, it may prove very costly against a talented, young Panthers crew that won’t be a pushover and has just as much to play for.
