The much-anticipated first episode of the 2026 version of Hard Knocks dropped on Tuesday evening. This year, they are covering the reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks as they begin training camp at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center.

The first episode opens with the Super Bowl ring ceremony (and a hilarious meme-worthy moment of quarterback Sam Darnold dropping his ring on the floor immediately). It was one last look at the 2025 team, and all that they accomplished.

It was a truly special run that led to the team’s second ever Lombardi Trophy. However, training camp is about resetting and starting all over with a blank slate. And starting at the bottom of the mountain upon which the Seahawks were just on top. Based on what we saw from the first episode, it seems the Seahawks have the perfect man in charge to take on that challenge.

Mike Macdonald was the clear star of the show in episode one. Not because he wanted to be. That’s not who he is. But the culture he has established in Seattle is palpable. There were several moments where Macdonald’s skills as a leader and qualities as a man shone through. He began camp by celebrating a few of his players’ “wins” in the offseason, such as getting married or having children. He even brought up the fact that Jaxon Smith-Nijgba joined the “99 Club” for Madden 27. He also brings up the 1990s Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson. That dynasty only took off once Jordan bought into a more selfless style of basketball with the team working as a cohesive unit. That clearly is present with the Seahawks, who have tons of big personalities.

‍The biggest peek into how Macdonald treats his players was during the scene with a frustrated Nick Emmanwori, who is clearly hobbled by his recent ankle surgery.

‍Emmanwori came into Macdonald’s office frustrated with his injury progress and worried about what others may think. He left the conversation with a bright smile and feeling validated, understood, and ultimately uplifted by his head coach’s encouraging words and supportive nature. That was a fantastic look into how he handles his players, which his players clearly respect.

Another example came after a skirmish between the offense and defense at practice, which he sternly breaks it up. Upon finding out that Brady Russell made Derick Hall mad by suggesting Hall’s recent new extension has “changed him,” Macdonald confronts Russell. After a pointed but still caring conversation with Russell giving Macdonald a stream of respectful “yes sirs,” Russell apologizes to Hall. Macdonald handled that brilliantly.

‍He commands respect during practice. He runs the team like a sharp CEO but with the tender care of a father figure. The players clearly respond to his “awe shucks” nature that is genuine. He is clearly a family man, taking time to watch a charming video of his son while he has a spare moment in his office.

Another interesting snapshot of Macdonald’s mentality is during that conversation with Emmanwori, he points out something in his office. A card with the statement from Rex Ryan, a former NFL head coach and current media figurehead, saying that Macdonald was a “hotshot coordinator” who was “terrible.” While Macdonald famously said “we did not care,” that doesn’t mean he doesn’t keep some receipts.

Macdonald now enters year three at the helm of the Seahawks. He became just the 12th head coach ever to win a Super Bowl within the first two years of being the head man and first since Doug Pederson with the Eagles in 2017. What will he and the Seahawks do for an encore?

Whatever happens in 2026, fans can clearly see that there is a plan in place and solid culture that Macdonald has built. That kind of structure is built to last and it will be exciting to see what else the Hard Knocks crew reveals about the head coach in coming episodes.
