There is usually an adjustment period for young basketball players once they reach the collegiate level. 18 and 19-year olds find themselves in elite-level programs with elevated standards, with a task to eclipse a learning curve at the next step towards professional hoops. But the newest Zag, Mario Saint-Supery, has been challenged significantly more than the average player who will get their first taste of college hoops this fall.

Saint-Supery hails from Spain, where he has already garnered four years of professional basketball experience. He began playing in LIGA ACB during the 2021-2022 season, being 15 years old when games began that year. Saint-Supery suited up with Unicaja for three seasons but didn’t get much run. He never averaged more than five minutes a game and didn’t play more than 10 games a season during his tenure with Unicaja. But he played for BAXI Manresa in 2024-25, appearing in 33 games, averaging 8.3 points, 2.1 assists, and 2.2 rebounds in nearly 15 minutes a game.

This international pipeline is a path Gonzaga has traversed before. Former Bulldog Domantas Sabonis played for Unicaja from 2012-2014 before coming to Spokane and former Zag Killian Tillie currently plays with the club. Saint-Supery is extremely skilled and can do a little bit of everything – especially offensively. He is a 6-4 combo guard that can score at all three levels and can fit in seamlessly with the Bulldogs as a secondary ball handler with an ability to play off-ball.

In his games played last season, Saint-Supery shot 46.7 percent from the field, showing an ability to score in a variety of ways. Whether that was spotting up off a kick-out pass, flipping up a floater over a taller defender, or slamming a dunk down in transition, he was effective and polished in his shot selection. He possesses a relatively quick release when necessary and knocked down 36.5 percent of his attempts from beyond the arc. Saint-Supery also shined in pick-and-roll action, both as the ball handler and as the roll man in inverted pick and roll situations.

As is increasingly common in international players, the basketball IQ and feel for the game are commendable for the now 19-year old Saint-Supery. He used leverage and patience to maneuver around defenders and create high-quality shots for himself and his teammates. His passing stands out as one of his best attributes, as he has exceptional touch with the ball in his hands. Even with being undersized and playing against much older competition, Saint-Supery embraces physicality by crashing the offensive boards and not shying away from contact. He capitalized when he drew fouls down low, shooting nearly 87 percent from the charity stripe.

Saint-Supery has active hands and seems to always know where the ball is, profiling as at least a serviceable defender in the backcourt. He is also a smart cutter and can settle in fine with Braeden Smith being Gonzaga’s primary point guard. With the assortment of versatile defensive wings on Gonzaga’s roster this season, Saint-Supery can fit into the rotation without having the pressure of being a stalwart on specifically one side of the ball, but instead being more of a Swiss-Army Knife at Mark Few’s disposal.

Saint-Supery played at the 2024 FIBA EuroBasket U-18 and averaged 21.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 6.6 assists for Spain. His run during the championships was highlighted by a 35-point triple-double where he logged 10 rebounds and 10 assists. His new teammate, Ismaila Diagne, also played in LIGA ACB and for the Real Madrid U-18 team before he came to Spokane. Currently, Saint-Supery is playing for the Spain National Team for 2025 EuroBasket which does run through the middle of September, likely leading to a late arrival to campus for the newest Zag.

With nine Bulldogs being 21 years old or older, Saint-Supery projects to be the youngest player in the regular rotation. But with his background playing overseas, he is no stranger to high-level basketball and is a player who could get immediate tick even while still being a teenager.
