SEATTLE, Wash. — Welcome to state championship week.

That’s how the Washington football team views the 2025 Apple Cup after losing it last year in head coach Jedd Fisch’s first season at the helm of the Huskies.

“Every game is a championship opportunity,” Fisch said at his press conference on Monday following UW’s bye week. “That’s always a mentality that coaches take. We have a goal here, and one of our goals is to own the state of Washington.”

Fisch pointed out that there are only so many trophies a team can try to win. For Washington, there are postseason trophies, Big Ten championships, and the Apple Cup.

“Obviously, our team is really focused, really focused on getting the trophy back here in Seattle, and we’re going to do everything we possibly can to get that done,” said Fisch, who lost his first Apple Cup 24-19 at Lumen Field in Seattle last season.

Washington enters the non-conference game following wins over Colorado State (38-21) and UC Davis (70-10). WSU has been all over the place with a new head coach and a mostly different roster. The Cougars slipped past FCS opponent Idaho 13-10 in their season opener, then looked impressive in a 36-13 win over San Diego State. WSU followed that up with a disastrous 59-10 loss at North Texas.

Washington, on the other hand, is looking to win its first game away from Husky Stadium under Fisch. UW, which has a 22-game home winning streak, is 8-0 under Fisch at home and 0-7 in road and neutral site games.

### The Play

If you’re reading this, you may have worked hard to forget the decisive play late in last year’s Apple Cup when UW quarterback Will Rogers was stopped short of the goal line on a fourth-down option play to the short side of the field. Fisch was asked about that play again on Monday. He repeated his thoughts from after the game last year, saying the play was not executed properly on the field.

“We didn’t execute the play very well, looking back on it. You know, on every play call any of us have ever had, when they work, we feel great about it. When they don’t work, we’re disappointed that it happened.”

“That was one of those plays, you know, you wish it worked, and you wish it had a different outcome — but it didn’t. And now it’s the responsibility of our staff, offensive, defense, special teams, to come out there and put together the best possible plan we can and hopefully have more plays that work than don’t work.”

### Injury updates

**Tacario Davis Questionable:** The Washington senior star cornerback is “questionable” for the Apple Cup and day-to-day “for a while,” Fisch said. Davis left the UC Davis game after a diving interception and did not return. Defensive tackle Jayvon Parker is also “being monitored,” according to Fisch. Parker has not played this season after tearing an Achilles tendon last season.

**Rashid Williams Out 6 Weeks:** Williams, who started the first two games at wide receiver, will miss approximately six weeks after surgery on his collarbone. The sophomore suffered the injury early in the UC Davis game after a 27-yard reception. Fisch said true freshman Dezmen Roebuck will star at the Y position, across from X Denzel Boston. Raiden Vines-Bright, another true freshman, remains the starter in the slot.

**Omari Evans returns:** Evans, a senior transfer from Penn State, will be available to play receiver in the Apple Cup. Fisch said Evans gives Washington an option in the slot and on the outside. Evans made some impressive catches early in spring ball as he seemed in line to start, but the speedster has missed time with injuries since then.

**Dyson McCutcheon Out for Season:** A senior reserve defensive back, McCutcheon is out for the season after shoulder surgery. A fifth-year senior, McCutcheon would need to be granted a medical redshirt to continue his college playing career, Fisch said.

### Fisch Addresses UCLA Question

With the firing of UCLA head coach Deshaun Foster on Sunday, Fisch was asked about his name being brought up as a candidate.

“I focus on the fact that we’re playing a team that beat us 24-19, and that is literally the only thing that I’m thinking about,” Fisch said. “We had a really tough game against them a year ago. We got stopped on the 1-yard line. My mind is strictly on that.”

Regarding how rivals might use Fisch’s future for negative recruiting, Fisch said, “A lot of players want to be a part of our program. I don’t worry about what other coaches say about what I’m going to do.”
