Washington Huskies receivers coach Kevin Cummings strikes again.
The UW caught its second blue chip receiver this week with the commitment of Dontay Tyson, a 6-3 four-star Class of 2027 recruit out Peoria (Ariz.) High School. Tyson is the second four-star receiver to commit to Cummings and head coach Jedd Fisch this week, joining Tre Moore, a 6-4 pass catcher out of Pluegerville, Texas, who made his choice on June 2.
It’s two additional big wins for Cummings, who already reeled in four-star Braylon Pope (Sumner, Wash.) and three-star Zerek Sidney (Desert Edge H.S., Goodyear, Ariz.) during the winter.
Tyson made his official visit last weekend, and also attended UW’s Junior Day event in March. He chose the Huskies over Texas A&M, and also had offers from, among others, Texas, USC, Tennessee, Oregon, Oklahoma and Arizona.
"For the next three to four years I will be attending Washington," Tyson said at a live announcement in front of family and friends.
Tyson played in just seven games during his junior season, but managed to haul in 37 catches for 448 yards and seven touchdowns. As a sophomore, he compiled 647 yards and seven TDs on 45 receptions.
“My relationship with coach Cummings is amazing and right at the top of all of the coaches I talk to," Tyson said back in April. "He taps in every day. We talk every day. He's a good dude. I've known him for a long time. He's very easy to talk to, and with all of his success in developing receivers to play at the next level, that's really impressive."
Tyson has a nice blend of size and speed. He's run a wind-aided 100 meters in 10.79 seconds, and has shown breakaway speed on the gridiron. Much like Moore and Pope, he’s a big-bodied receiver who shows the ability to make contested catches with soft hands and excellent body control.
"I am a big wide receiver who can go up and get the ball, but I am also a speedster,” Tyson said. “I can fit in anywhere the coaching staff wants or needs me to play."
Washington’s class currently ranks 16th in the country with its 17th commit. Washington will attempt to hold on to all of them and add about eight more before signing day in December. Tyson is the eighth four-star recruit in UW’s 2027 class, according to the 247Sports composite ratings.
It’s another strong recruiting cycle from Cummings, who also landed a trio of four-star receivers Jordan Clay, Trez Davis and Mason James in the 2026 class.
Fisch and Cummings continue to leverage connections made while they coached at Arizona from 2021-23. Four of the top 10 Class of 2027 Arizona high school prospects, per 247Sports, have committed to UW, including quarterback Blake Roskopf (No. 4), Tyson (No. 7), running back Jeremy Adeyanju (No. 8) and Sidney (No. 10).
More commitments could be coming in the next few days, as UW is in the midst of hosting its second straight major official visit weekend.
