Back in the win column for the first time in a month, Gonzaga women’s soccer (3-7, 1-1) played perhaps its most complete game of the season. Powered by consistent offensive pressure from their top two scorers in Katelynn Rigg and Amelia Severn, it was a great day at the office for the Zags as they snapped a six-game losing streak in a 4-0 victory over a San Diego squad (3-1-5) that hadn’t been defeated on the season entering play.

The Bulldogs’ winless stretch wasn’t lost on the club, and Severn discussed what the win meant for her team after the game with the ESPN+ broadcast.

“It feels really good. Obviously, the last couple of weeks have been rough, but I think we’ve tried to keep the morale high,” she said.

Going 2-7 in the first nine games after being predicted to finish third in the WCC Preseason Poll was assuredly tough, but Severn says they are wiping the slate clean as the games that are in front of them are the only ones they can control.

“…We know how good we are, and we know how good we can be, and conference \[play\] gives us a reset. So we have nine more games to go out and win conference, and it doesn’t matter what happened in the past, we just have to look forward to conference because that’s all that matters.”

Although the teams had even possession during the contest, the Bulldogs maximized their chances with the ball. They outshot the Toreros 13-4 on the night and were on the attack from kickoff. The first shot for San Diego didn’t come until the 41-minute mark, but it skidded just to the left of the post, and Zags’ keeper, Michaela McCollum, easily reeled it in. It was one of two shots on goal by the Toreros as the Bulldogs totaled seven shots on frame.

After a San Diego corner kick at 8’, the Zags knocked the ball out of the box, which Samantha Snorsky headed to herself and took it upfield. Running with Snorsky to her left was Severn as she pushed the action the other way before delivering a timely through ball with Severn out in front. Ruby Shoots of the Toreros caught up to Severn and put hands on her to deter her from the net as she approached San Diego’s waiting keeper, Ilise Medrano. Through traffic and contact, Severn tapped the ball through Shoots’ legs as she tried to knock the ball away. It rolled slowly into the right side of the net, right past Medrano, who was too close to make a play.

Something inherently noticeable was Medrano, routinely not just coming out of the net, but out of the box, even when the ball was pushed past midfield. This strategy was tested almost immediately when a loose ball was pushed back in Torero territory, and Rigg pressed the issue within the first two minutes. As Rigg and a San Francisco defender wrestled for the ball, Medrano had to race back towards the net. Rigg managed to gain possession and maneuver around the defender to get a shot off. Her attempt tailed just over Medrano’s head but off the center of the crossbar before rattling out. Emily Todd quickly tried to kick the ball in off the rebound, but it sailed over the post.

But a similar play occurred in the second half after a Medrano save. She set up a goal kick at 60’ but kicked it short to one of her defenders with the Zags pressing. The process was rushed, and the ball bounced off the intended Torero recipient and back towards the net, where Rigg came flying in. Medrano went to retrieve the ball but couldn’t get there in time, as Rigg corralled it and boxed the keeper out. It left USD defender Kate Sealy in goal as the de facto keeper, and Rigg fired a shot squarely into the center of the post with Sealy positioned on the left side.

Gonzaga also had seven corners to best USD’s four, and they converted one of the opportunities in the 64th minute. Severn takes the team’s corners on the left side, and she served up a perfect one that landed on the right foot of Olivia Lester, who was the furthest Zag away from Severn. There was no one in front of Lester, and with no extra setup needed from the pass, all she had to do was kick her foot forward – and that she did. The ball snuck inside the right post for the third Bulldogs goal of the game.

It should be no surprise that Severn was somewhat involved in the fourth and final Zags goal as well. At 82’, she took the ball the other way with two defenders circling her the whole stretch. But she lost control and fell, causing the Torero behind her to fall in the process. It left the ball in no-man’s land, with Brooke Metcalfe coming in uncontested from the right side to curve it in past a diving Medrano.

The freshman Snorsky was all over the field in this one, and it seemed she could taste her first collegiate goal throughout the match. Even though she couldn’t land the ball in the back of the net herself, she continues to be all over the field in each game and a consistent bright spot for the Zags this season.

It was also the first shutout for McCollum since the Aug. 28 win over UIC, and even though she had a quiet two-save night, it was a positive performance for the redshirt sophomore keeper who’s had a rough go of it of late.

GU will wrap up this three-game homestand on Sat, October 4, against San Francisco (1-5-3, 0-1-1) at 1 PM PT.
