Things started out competitive, but Gonzaga women’s basketball suddenly flipped the switch on Carroll College Sunday afternoon in a 91-31 drubbing at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

The game was tied at 12 with two minutes to go in the first quarter, but the Zags tightened up on both ends from then on, outscoring the Fighting Saints 32-4 in the ensuing period. 73-19 was the point disparity in the last three quarters, as the Bulldogs cruised in their lone exhibition match of the 2025-26 schedule.

There is a lot of roster turnover from GU this season, with experienced players leaving the building and younger players expected to play a larger role. With this, there is a lot of opportunity for those not in the starting lineup. Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier says a good portion of her team is more one-dimensional at the moment, causing minimal distance created in the pecking order of her rotations.

“No one has really separated themselves too much yet in practice. I think that some players are good at one thing or another, and other players do something different,” Fortier said. “And so I think until the next wave of players really kind of decides themselves in practice, and someone earns something, then I think it's going to be kind of a day-by-day situation.”

The situation creates a playstyle for Fortier where she expects her team to be track stars in-game, no matter who is on the floor.

“I think when you're deep, you need to run. We're young,” she said.

Against CCU, the Zags forced 23 turnovers, scoring 28 points off of them. They repeatedly raced down the court after getting stops defensively and imposed their will on the smaller-statured Fighting Saints, pushing the ball inside continuously. The Bulldogs shot 37-of-43 from the free-throw line, only taking 12 threes.

For last year’s WCC Freshman of the Year, Allie Turner, who broke out with a program record 105 threes in her first season, she acknowledged the importance of getting out and running to create offense.

“\[Running\]’s a big emphasis this year. I think that we could have been better at that last year,” she said. And then our coaches always say we're going to play Gonzaga basketball, so we're going to play together. We're going to play fast…we did shoot a lot of free throws today. Part of it was the refs were calling a lot of fouls both ways. Part of it was we were being really aggressive towards the basket. A lot of it was in transition, like we were saying earlier. So I think first of all, shooting it well at the line is a big emphasis, but getting there was pretty good today, too.

Turner was just 4-of-5 from the field, hitting a couple of three pointers aside from a 9-for-10 day from the charity stripe en route to a 19-point performance. But GU’s leading scorer was Weber State transfer Taylor Smith, who dropped 20 points in the Zags’ lone exhibition game and will be counted on heavily in her junior campaign.

She also grabbed four rebounds and recorded two steals in the victory. Fortier pointed out Smith’s ability to step up when the lights were on, performing admirably in the live scenarios leading up to the regular season, including a few scrimmages and the Fan Fest game. Fitting into the starting lineup with the program’s returners like Turner and Inês Bettencourt has made the transition smooth for Smith, and she says she is just looking to replicate her production.

“Honestly, they make my job really easy. So, yeah, they're really good, and they make good reads. And they've obviously both been here a year. They have experience, so just being able to come in and translate what I did before to here, and then just adding them into the mix is just really nice and smooth. So it's been fun.”

It has also been enjoyable for Turner, who visibly recognized Smith’s effort on both ends.

“I felt like every time I passed it to you \[Smith\], you scored,” Turner said. “So that was pretty nice. You ran in transition...At one point in the timeout, \[assistant coach\] Craig \[Fortier\] was like, ‘Are you okay?’, because she just ran the floor four times down and back. So running really hard, made pretty much every shot, there was a lot to like.”

All 13 Bulldogs on the roster registered at least 10 minutes in the win. Redshirt freshman Lauren Whittaker was the only other Zag to join Turner and Smith in double figures in scoring, logging 12 points on eight made free throws. There is still a lot to sort out for Fortier and her staff before the team’s season opener on Nov. 7 against North Dakota State, as she got a later start with the team due to health issues, but she emphasizes that although they are in a good spot, there is plenty of room to grow.

“I've been laid up a little bit, and so it feels like, finally, I feel like I'm coaching my own team. Our first scrimmage, I felt like I was kind of coaching someone else's team because I hadn't worked with them individually as much,” Fortier said. “But, you know, we'll see, it's a process, and it's going to be that this year, for sure. We're trying to figure ourselves out.”
