After Gonzaga women’s soccer (5-8-2, 3-2-2) and Santa Clara (6-6-3, 2-2-3) tied at Luger Field on Wednesday night, 1-1, both sides felt they missed opportunities to pick up a pivotal win down the stretch.

For the Broncos, specifically in the second half, they had plenty of chances in GU territory to knot the score before, and even after, eventually doing so. Many of the Zags’ prime offensive sequences came in the first half, as they had to shift their attention to keeping Santa Clara away as time waned. But the Bulldogs’ backline held strong, that was until an own goal on a corner kick put a damper on an otherwise remarkable defensive effort by GU.

12 of SCU’s 18 total shots came in the final 45 minutes, and Gonzaga’s defenders, along with keeper Michaela McCollum, deterred all of them. The primary aggressors for Santa Clara were Mailin Orozco and Kennedy Schoennauer, who took five and four shots, respectively. 15 minutes in, Orozco skidded the ball past a diving McCollum from the left side, just outside the box, but it tailed wide right slightly. Three minutes later, she dribbled around Kylie Jones before firing the ball off the crossbar.

In the 74th minute, Orozco was finally rewarded, albeit with some luck. She took a corner kick from the left side and hit it right at McCollum. But McCollum put both forearms out in front of her, punching the ball away instead of attempting to catch it. The ball then ricocheted off Makayla Werner and rolled into the net between the two, with Olivia Lester and Taylor Gentry also in the area.

Like SCU, the late blunder seemed even more disheartening for the Zags as they couldn’t add to a lead after ample chances earlier in the match. Gonzaga got on the board early, as in the 13th minute, Samantha Snorsky flipped the ball into the box while backed up near the right end line. Amelia Severn then adjusted herself to head it into a cluster of players in front of the net. Annie Boyden came up with the ball out of the group, settling it before knocking it into the net with her left foot before Broncos keeper Ally Harrison could react.

At 22’, the Bulldogs nearly doubled their lead when Lester pushed a through ball between two defenders to Severn. Harrison came out of the goal to go for a slide tackle, but Severn got a shot off past her before the two collided. Offside was immediately called by the side judge, and Severn pleaded for a review from her sideline. But head coach Katie Benz did not challenge, even though Severn had a viable argument that she wasn’t illegally behind the defense.

Severn had another chance a few minutes later when Boyden cross-fired from the left endline, with Severn cutting through the center. It was a perfect pass, as Severn got a jumping header off to the opposite side of where Harrison was positioned, but it banged off the left post. She took charge of the offense as Gonzaga was once again stifled in their ability to create corner kicks, in addition to being without their second-leading scorer, Katelyn Rigg, for the start of the match.

It was the first time all season that Rigg wasn’t a starter. Alexis Parker was inserted into the starting lineup in her place, with the junior forward not going on the pitch until about the 35’ mark, logging 55 minutes on the night.

Each team had close calls in the final 20 minutes as well. Right before the Broncos got the fortunate bounce on that corner kick, a through ball to Schoenmaker was too far out in front and right to Gentry. But the Gonzaga defender let the ball come to her instead of attacking it, and Schoenmaker hustled to take it away from her, with no one to beat in the box. McCollum then came out of the net, with her slide in close enough proximity to rush Schoenmaker’s shot, which missed wide right.

At 81’, Snorsky took a miraculous trek down the left endline, weaving through Santa Clara defenders and hopping over slide tackle attempts. Right before Snorsky went out of play near the post, she crossed to Parker, who was right in front of the net. But Parker sent the ball high up and over the net immediately on its arrival, perhaps pressured by the Broncos’ Adee Goulden, who became the de facto keeper when Harrison left her post to defend Snorsky.

With just four games remaining in the WCC season and no conference tournament in place, every team is chasing unbeaten Pepperdine (6-0-1) to claim an automatic bid in the national bracket. Gonzaga is sitting at sixth in the standings, with another home contest against fourth-place Seattle University (7-2-6, 3-2-2) on Saturday, October 25, at 6 PM PT up next on the slate.
